Over the last two weeks, 18 local youths have had smiles on their faces while putting joy in families' and friends' hearts as they participated in the ACES softball games.

These special kids played hard as they hit balls, fielded grounders and played catch with their coaches and teammates under the hot summer sun. There was even time for hotdog and french fry eating as the good folks of the Northeast Little League donated their facility and time to insure every child had a chance to enjoy the fun of summer.

ACES - All Children Experience Sports - is a programs put on by the DSRC (Disability Services Resource Center). With the generous donations of local sponsors, the ACES program insures that ALL children, especially those with physical, emotional or mental challenges, experience the fun of sports.

Softball is a great way for many of these children to enjoy what many of us have enjoyed throughout our lives: the smell of fresh cut grass, the delight of hitting a softball and the thrill of running the bases. The two week league consisted of 5 games with an Awards Banquet following the final game on Saturday. It was such a heart warming day watching these special people so thoroughly enjoying the day.

ACES is but one program that the DSRC puts on for local people facing physical challenges in our community. Through ACES, the DSRC also sponsors a bowling league beginning in September as well as a Horsemanship for Handicap program that runs in both the fall and spring.

For more information on any of these programs, please contact Donna Clough, Office Manager at the DSRC at 895-5444.
