Frankenmuth Farmers Market's
"Feast of the Harvest Moon"

On Tuesday, September 13, 2011 one hundred lucky diners will devour a five-course local-foods extravaganza at the Frankenmuth Farmers Market's "Feast of the Harvest Moon" offered in partnership with Zehnder's of Frankenmuth. Under the enchantment of that evening's full moon, guests inside Zehnder's will feast upon the season's harvest while enjoying music, a local art auction, and a program by Stan Bozich, founder, director, and curator of Michigan's Own Military and Space Museum.

The evening will begin with a 5pm social hour before the 6pm meal. Themed "The Victory Garden: a Homegrown Effort of Patriotic Strength and Local Sustenance," this second annual event is a fundraiser helping to "grow" the local foods movement and the Market. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Museum. With seating limited to 100 guests, tickets are $60 each, $110 for couples, or $400 for a table of eight, available at the Market or by calling (989) 295-9766.

On the heels of a tremendously successful Pig Roast at the Market generously sponsored by Zehnder's, the restaurant is again partnering to benefit the Market by offering guests a unique menu of native offerings not to be found anywhere else or ever again!

Frankenmuth's own nationally renowned Executive Chef John Zehnder, CEC, ACE, OGT, and ACF/AAC has created the locally sourced menu, drawing inspiration from the Chippewas' Ricing Moon celebration when wild rice was gathered.

The menu features Cauliflower Curry Bisque with Garlic Parkerhouse Rolls, Lake Superior Whitefish Ardussi with Wild Rice Pilaf, Hot Bacon and Bitter Greens Salad with Pears and Gorgonzola, Roast Berkshire Pork Prime Rib with a Demi Glacé accompanied by a Baked Corn and Dry Bean Casserole and Grilled Organic Tomato in a Parmesan Cheese Basket, finishing with a Buttery Apple Rum Raisin Strudel with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.

Chef John Zehnder's fondness for culinary history fuels his concern for the future of our food supply, as evidenced by his eagerness to support the Market and its local foods movement: 'In this day of over-processed and additive added foods, Farmers Markets play an important role in educating people about alternative healthy options like fresh picked, organic and heirloom produce available only during our short summer season. We all need to pay more attention to healthier eating habits. That's why here at Zehnder's we enthusiastically support the Frankenmuth Farmers Market. Local, sustainable agriculture and a return to basics are where we need to go in the U.S. if we're going to have a safe and nutritious food supply.'

"Zehnder's generosity in supporting our Market illustrates the same pat on the back that happens when consumers work with their farmers to support them, growing our local food supply together," says Dietrich Bronner, president of both the Market and the Michigan Farmers Market Association. Frankenmuth Insurance is also a sponsor of the Feast.

For tickets, sponsorship opportunities, or to join the Market's email newsletter list, please contact Laurajeanne Kehn at (989) 295-9766 or ljskehn@gmail.com. The Market operates Saturdays 9am-2pm through October 15 in Downtown Frankenmuth next to Harvest Coffeehouse, 626 S. Main Street and 3-6pm Wednesdays through September 14 at Frankenmuth Credit Union, 580 N. Main Street. The Market accepts credit and debit cards and EBT for Project FRESH and Senior Project FRESH recipients.
