Bay City Central has high hopes of getting a winning formula going this year. Looking to capitalize their team speed by moving to an option offense, the Wolves show promise of putting points on the board while running down their opponents.

But a grueling opening schedule which includes a first game against undefeated Saginaw Heritage and the this week hosting the two-time defending league champion, Mt. Pleasant has kept that formula from gelling early. While showing glimpse of that team speed and the potential explosiveness of their offense, it was the Oilers that controlled the game and came away with a 37-14 TVC win.

The Oilers used a two prong attack of senior Ryan Elliot by air and sophomore running back, Michael Tweh to control much of the offensive firepower and build an early first quarter lead. The Oilers scored twice in the opening quarter first on a six yard pass from Elliot to Colton Odykirk and less than 3 minutes later, on a Tweh 4 yard run. With both extra point attempts failing, Mt. Pleasant was up 12-0.

The Central hopeful didn't have long to wait to see the potential speed and explosiveness of the Wolves' offense. On Central's next possession, quarterback Brett Leppek broke loose for a 73 yard touchdown run pulling Central back into the game, 12-7.

This seemed to be looking up when Central's Alex Chorba recovered an Oiler football early in the second quarter. But the Mt. Pleasant defense kept Central in check and soon the Oiler offense was rolling. Michael Tweh scored from 11 yards out and a two point conversion pass from Ryan Elliot to Spencer Moran had the Oilers extending their lead to 20-7.

On Mt. Pleasant's next possession, they drove down field again relying on the arm of Elliot and the legs of Tweh's as he capped off the drive with his third touchdown of the half from four yards out. When Elliot found Odykirk in the end zone for two points, the Oilers had built a 28-7 halftime lead.

A Central fumble at midfield gave Mt. Pleasant good field position in the early part of the third quarter. The Oilers marched to the 6 yard line but Central's defense held. Mt. Pleasant settled for a 23 yard field goal by Zac Kramer and a 31-7 lead. The Oilers struck again two minutes later when Douglas Cesena made a 1 yard touchdown run and with the missed extra point, Mt. Pleasant held a comfortable 37-7 lead.

Central was able to dent the scoreboard one last time in the fourth quarter. Sophomore running back Andre Houston scored from 8 yards out to make the final score 37-14. Houston's touchdown was little compensation from his earlier spectacular 87 yard touchdown run that was called back due to a penalty. However, this showed the explosiveness this offense possesses and is sure to get on track as the season progresses.

Mt. Pleasant's Ryan Elliot led all players with a 15 for 19 aerial assault for 270 yards while running back Michael Tweh carried the ball 17 times for 135 yards.

Central was lead by quarterback Brett Leppek who completed 5 passes for 69 yards while rushing for 62 yards on 6 carries.

Junior quarterback Austin Jones completed 3 passes for 25 yards while rushing for 43 yards on 10 carries. Brian Bedell and Andre Houston each ran for 52 yards to lead the Wolves running backs.

Next week Central travels to Saginaw to take on 1-1 Saginaw High. Game time is Friday at 7 pm.
