The Tri City Icehawks were set to open their season on the road against the Mountain Cats on Friday, September 9. However the game has been cancelled as well as the rematch the following night at Ice Mountain Arena in Burton, Michigan.

Art Dore, Jr.
IceHawks Owner
According to Icehawks owner, Art Dore Jr., the Mountain Cats ownership for years has sponsored two Junior teams in two leagues. Because of their different tier designations, many of their players have participated on both teams thus allowing player movement between the teams. With USA Hockey having done away with the tier designations, they now sponsor two teams in the same division although still different leagues.

According to Dore, both leagues, including the Great Lakes Junior Hockey League which the Icehawks are members of, recently decided not to allow the free movement of players between the leagues. This has left the Mountain Cat organization without a sufficient number of players to adequately support both teams. Therefore it was necessary to cancel this weekends games while the Mountain Cats determine the fate of their teams. Dore expects and answer within the next few days.

While the cancellations delay the start of the season by a week, it also means that the Icehawks will be able to start their season at home Saturday September 17 against the Chicago Bulldogs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm with a Sunday rematch set for noon. This should be a very exciting and entertaining season as the Icehawks have shown in their two exhibition games to be significantly improved over last year's team. Come support your team as they open the season at home.
