Classes Offered At Bay Regional Medical Center

"Breast Cancer Treatment: Past, Present, and Future"

Bay Regional Medical Center will offer a free community education program, "Breast Cancer Treatment: Past, Present, and Future", on Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 820 S. Lincoln, Bay City.

Information about breast cancer diagnosis and treatment changes frequently. Sorting through the often confusing information can be a challenge. Randal Croshaw, MD, Bay Regional Breast Surgeon, will present an informative program to sort through the latest treatment options. There will be time for questions and answers with Dr. Croshaw. Enjoy refreshments, educational displays and more!

Stroke Screening

Bay Regional Medical Center, in conjunction with the American Stroke Association, will be offering a Stroke Screening at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 East Midland Road, Bay City, on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

You have the power to prevent stroke! Stroke doesn't discriminate; it affects people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. Fortunately, most strokes are preventable, and you can take steps now to reduce having a stroke.

The Stroke Screening will include blood pressure and pulse, diabetes screening, and full lipid profile, which includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides, results counseling and a risk reduction plan. A 12-hour fast is required for accurate results. Even though this is a fasting blood test, it is extremely important that participants take morning medication as usual, with a sip of water. The cost for the screening is $10.00 per person.

"Concussion Management" Class

Bay Regional Medical Center's Center for Rehabilitation will offer a "Concussion Management" class on Tuesday, September 27, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 820 S. Lincoln, Bay City.

A panel of experts will discuss sports-associated concussions, including signs and symptoms and the short and long term effects. They will answer questions related to recognizing symptoms of a concussion, treatment and return to sports. Parents of student athletes, coaches, and all others are welcome to attend. The panel consists of Dr. Ravi Lakkaraju, Board Certified in Sports Medicine; Dr. Amanda Schafer, Neuropsychologist; Margaret Arnold, Physical Therapist; Jeff Maier, Athletic Trainer; and a Bay Regional Medical Center Paramedic.

Breastfeeding Class

Bay Regional Medical Center has scheduled a Breastfeeding Class on Tuesday, September 27 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Women's Health Pavilion, 3175 West Professional Drive, Bay City.

For expectant mothers who wish to have more information on breastfeeding, we will address your questions and concerns and provide information on: benefits, getting off to the best start, proper positioning/latching on, troubleshooting tips, feeding patterns in infants, pumping and storing breast milk, and back-to-work routine. We encourage you to bring a support person to class.

The class is $25 for the one-night class, however the fee is reduced to $20 if also registered for any other class through BRMC's Childbirth & Parent Education program. BLS HealthCare Providers Course

Bay Regional Medical Center will offer an American Heart Association-approved Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider Course on Wednesday, September 21, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 820 South Lincoln, Bay City.

The BLS for Healthcare Provider Course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for all ages (including ventilation with a bag-mask device, use of an AED, and relief of a foreign body airway obstruction.) It is intended for participants who provide health care to patients in a variety of settings.

The fee for the BLS Healthcare Provider Class is $25 per person BRMC employees and includes the textbook (textbook available for $20). All others pay $50 and includes the textbook. New Support Group -- "Embrace Your Heart"

Bay Regional Medical Center is offering a new support group, "Embrace Your Heart", for individuals who have heart failure and their support persons. "Embrace Your Heart" meets the second Thursday of each month at Bay Regional Medical Center, 1900 Columbus Avenue, Bay City, in the Small Café Conference Room (conference room adjacent to the Cafeteria). The next meeting is Thursday, October 13 at 1:00 p.m.

Each meeting will have a guest speaker, who will discuss topics such as: nutrition, medications, exercise, treatments, importance of self-care, emotional well being, tips for reducing strain on your heart and breathing easier, and ideas for talking with your healthcare provider. Participants are asked to bring a list of their current medications, including over-the-counter and vitamins, to every meeting. There is no fee to attend the support group. Heart Failure is a condition that affects nearly five million Americans of all ages and is responsible for more hospitalizations than all forms of cancer combined. Over 400,000 new cases of heart failure will be diagnosed in the next year.

FREE BREAST CANCER SCREENING

Bay Regional Medical Center will be offering a free Breast Cancer Screening on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 and Tuesday, October 18, 2011 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bay Diagnostic Center, located at the Women's Health Pavilion, 3175 W. Professional Drive, Bay City.

The screening includes a free digital mammogram. The screening is encouraged for women 40 years and older, who have not had a mammogram in the past twelve months, and have no health insurance.

Pre-registration is required. Please call 989-667-6350 between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to register for this screening.
