October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
The Bay Area Women's Center has several community events planned in
observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
National Day of Unity will kick off the month's events, October 3rd.
Bay Area Women's Center will begin distributing PURPLE AWARENESS RIBBONS
to Local Law Enforcement agencies in recognition of Domestic Violence
Awareness Month.
Purple Ribbons will be placed on the antennas of the
patrol cars as a visual reminder that our community will not tolerate
any type of domestic violence. You may contact BAWC to receive your
Purple Ribbon. BAWC will receive recognition at the Bay City
Commissioners Meeting at 7:30 PM proclaiming October as Domestic
Violence Awareness Month.
Domestic Violence Awareness Walk and Candlelight Vigil.
Participants are invited to join the BAWC on October
5th to show community support as we honor survivors and remember victims
of domestic violence. The Awareness Walk begins at 5:30 at the FP Horak
building and proceeds over Veteran's Bridge to the Bay County Community
Center where the Vigil and program entitled, "Signs of Domestic
Violence" will begin at 6:00 PM, followed by a Survivor's Speak Out.
Refreshments will be served and the 4th annual Purple Ribbon Award will
be announced. For Purple Ribbon nomination forms please call 686-4551.
Sidewalk Art Workshop will take place on October 6th in Down Town Bay
City. Artists will complete their chalking 2:00 - 4:30 and the Downtown
Art Walk will be from 5:00 - 8:00.
The Clothesline Project is a national program started in 1990 to address
the issue of violence against women. It gives survivors an opportunity
to leave behind some of their pain on a shirt-canvas. The shirts are
hung on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem
of violence against women.
