Eric Devendorf
Past State Elks Hoop Shoot Winner

Eric Devendorf is a good example of why community programs to interest kids in athletics are important.

A past state winner of the Elks Hoop Shoot Contest, Devendorf is now one of the nation's hottest university basketball prospects.

Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim recently announced that Eric Devendorf of Bay City, has signed a national letter-of-intent to play for the Orange beginning next season.

Devendorf, a 6-3, 180, guard, is attendingOak Hill Academy (Va.) this year. Oak Hill was ranked second in the preseason USA Today High School Poll and has started the season with a 2-0 record. Devendorf is averaging 20.0 points an outing. Prior to his senior season, he was enrolled at Central High School here. As a junior, he averaged 30.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Devendorf set the school career scoring record in just three seasons at Central. He played AAU basketball for the Michigan Hurricanes, and was invited to compete for the 2004 USA North Team in the USA Youth Development Festival.      Devendorf was ranked 16th in the class of 2005 by Rivals.com and 18th by Hoopmasters.com. His shooting guard rankings include fourth by The Insiders Hoops and sixth by Rivals.com.

Devendorf formerly lived with his parents, Curt and Cindy, both employees of Saginaw County, on Seventh Street in Bay City. He is one of a handful of Bay City lads who have gotten bids to play Division I university basketball, according to former Central cage coach Art Nixon. The first was Artie Lipan, a St. James product who played for Temple University in the early part of the 20th Century. Next was Milt Mead, a 6-11 Central High stalwart and University of Michigan basketball and track star in the 1950s. Then 7-foot Tom Pacynski, a high school All American from St. Mary, played for Coach Bob Cousy at Boston College in the early 1960s. Last known Division I male college hoop stars from Bay City were All Saints stars Mark Talaga, who played for CoachGus Ganakas at Michigan State, and Billy Harris, a cager at Eastern Michigan University in the 1970s.

Officials of Bay City Elks Lodge 88 point out that programs like the Elks Hoop Shoot contest reinforce young people's interest in competitive athletics and provide important recognition.

This past Saturday about 30 young participants from age 8 to 13 fired baskets under close supervision in the Elks Hoop Shoot at Garber High's gym.

The six winners were: Taylor Schlink, 8-9 year old girls; William Gust, 8-9 year old boys; Tyler Schlink, 10-11 year old boys; Allison Gust, 10-11 year old girls; Michael Schroeder, 12-13 year old boys; and Katrina VanDenBoom, 12-13 year old girls.
