Thursday night, the Disability Services Resource Center held their annual Soup Dinner fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Essexville. Twenty one local businesses donated soups, breads, desserts and other needed items to help make this event a success. Hundreds of local residents filled the hall to sample some of the areas delicious soups and enjoy good conversation. But the real winners are the many local children, women and men who will benefit from the resources and services the DSRC is able to provide from fundraisers like this soup dinner.

The Disability Services Resource Center, located just east of the Liberty Bridge at 1820 N. Trumbull Ave., is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing assistance to persons with disabilities in the Bay County area. While they are best know for the building and installing of handicap ramps at residential homes, they also provide needed medical equipment like recliner lifts, wheelchairs, beds, walkers and other disability medical equipment all FREE of charge to Bay County residents. DSRC also sponsors the ACES program, All Children Experience Sports, like a fall and winter bowling league as well as a summer softball program.

DSRC funding relies entirely on grants, fundraisers like the Soup Dinner and donations with all the money raised staying here in Bay County to benefit Bay County residents. Other fun fundraisers they conduct are the Garden Tea Party held in July utilizing their on-site handicap accessible flower garden, a Silent Auction Dinner held in April and many other fun activities throughout the year. Upcoming events are a Rummage Sale at the DSRC, Friday and Saturday November 10th and 11th, a Craft Show at the Bay County Community Center Saturday November 26, and a Pancake Buffet held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on River Rd. Sunday December 4. For more information please call DSRC at 895-5444.

But on this Thursday night, the soup took center stage as gallons were consumed with barely a drop left by the end of the night. A survey of the tables did not reveal a clear favorite as it seemed everyone had a different favorite. I know I had four favorites (I didn't eat more than four) with my family each having a different one they liked. It was great that the variety of soups catered to the various tastes of people.

A special thanks to the kind people at DSRC who give or their time to benefit so many others. And of course, a VERY special thanks to the many businesses that supported this event. Those businesses, and I hope not to miss any are as follows: Knights of Columbus Essexville, Rudy J's, Big Boy on Center Ave. And Euclid Ave., Texan Restaurant, Bob Evans, Spatz Bakery, Wanigans Eatery, Ponderosa on Center Ave. And Wilder Ave., Linwood Corners, Grampa Tonys East and West, Krzysiaks House, Chen's Buffet, Uno Chicago Grill, Stock Pot, Cracker Barrel, Intermission Deli, Heathers, Red Lobster and the Mandarin House.

Mark down the various fundraiser as they come along and know you are supporting your neighbors in need as all monies raised stay in Bay County to help Bay County residents.

Many stayed for the good conversation.
