It was 'One Amazing Night' at The 3rd Annual BACSlapper, held October 22 at St. John Elementary School, was a success in every way.

A larger crowd gathered this year, including many who have attended the past two years plus a lot of new faces. Bishop Joseph Cistone, Judge Mark Janer, Essexville Mayer Russ Tanner and Bay City mayoral candidate Kathy Newsham were among them.

When all was said and done, with bills paid, funds raised were in excess of $35,000. This income will be used for tuition assistance and other needs within your Bay Area Catholic Schools.

More than 120 quality silent auction items were available for bidding, the most items ever donated, plus nine other special game prizes. Patrons seemed to appreciate the change in location of the auction items; the bidding was livelier with several items' fate undetermined until the final seconds.

Gaming was also popular, with particular enthusiasm for Big 6, Roulette and Blackjack. Texas Hold'em and Euchre rounded out the card playing opportunities this year. Additionally, some big prize raffles and 50-50's lent excitement and fun to the evening. Duane Forbes won the $10,000 Giant Cash Raffle. Winners of the $1,000 cash prizes were: Greg Lasco, Lindsay Eurich, Tom & Mary Ann Clements, Jan Jaskiewicz, and Jeannie Anderson.

E.C. McCaffrey, The Traveling Epicure, who catered the event, brought international flavors and fresh ingredients together masterfully in a very memorable presentation. Whether one sampled St. Juan Diego's Empanadas, Blessed Mother Teresa's Chicken Satay, St. John's Pie, St. Peter's Lasagna Pomodoro or any of the other dishes created for BACSlapper, smiles and exclamations of approval soon followed.

The traditional late-night breakfast included with the admission ticket, featuring made-to-order omelets and delicious accompaniments, rounded out the evening's taste treats. was again prepared by locally renowned Chef Jim Martini.

Musical interludes of pianist Mary Bleau also contributed to the festive atmosphere as old and new friends mingled, played, dined, drank, pondered, and enjoyed.

Administrator of Schools Michael Knoff stated, "Every year the BACSlapper improves in many ways: more people, more auction items, and more funds raised. Having fun and raising money mix together in a wonderful way. As people were leaving, I heard them saying they were looking forward to next year."

The 4th Annual BACSlapper is slated for October 20, 2012. Individuals or businesses wishing to be involved for next year should contact Tim McCaffrey at 989-892-2533.

BACS employs more than 50 people and functions as a 'system' of Catholic schools. BACS students provide thousands of hours of community service and outreach here in the Great Lakes Bay Region and beyond.
