"It's an exciting time", remarked Sean K. Kesterson, M.D., and keynote speaker for the Bay Area Energize luncheon held Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at Valley Plaza Resort in Midland.

Kesterson, serves as the Associate dean of clinical affairs, hospital relations and chief medical officer for recently established CMU College of Medicine.

Attendees of Wednesday's luncheon saw firsthand Kesterson's enthusiasm and dedication of bringing CMU's medical school to the area to help address a growing national physician shortage.

He also notes "insufficient U.S. medical education opportunities for qualified students, an aging statewide population, medically under-served regions in mid and northern Michigan and the UP, the need for regionally relevant health related research and economic opportunities for mid Michigan in the life sciences sector."

CMU's focus will be to prepare students for practice in mid and northern Michigan by offering students the opportunity to earn a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) after the successful completion of their four year program.

The hope is that up to 70% recruited from a currently under-served area, would graduate and remain in Michigan, practicing medicine and adding to the quality of care for residents.

CMU College of Medicine intends to welcome its inaugural class of 60 students in the summer of 2013. The program is not accredited yet and Kesterson indicated this is a 4 stage process. They are currently in the 2nd stage and are considered a Candidate School.

Plans for campus sites in Mt. Pleasant and Saginaw by 2020 are in the planning phase.

When asked if financial aid or scholarships would be available Kesterson responded by saying CMU is committed to helping in the financial aid process by offering aid packages and the assistance of a entire financial department to help students.

He expressed he hopes that "finances won't seem like a barrier to students" and went on to say CMU's intentions will be "to work really hard on that".
