The Great Lakes Bay Region has over 1000 men and women currently deployed. 'Send Santa to the Troops' is in their 7th year collecting items and donations to send holiday care packages to deployed Military Personnel.

Yellow Ribbon Guard and volunteers have been working hard preparing for the season's 'Send Santa to the Troops'. Collections started in October.

Over this past weekend, the Blue Lakes Charters & tours Bus were collecting items and accepting monetary donations to send care packages to the troops deployed or stationed over seas. The bus made stops to Garber Buick in Saginaw, Great Lakes Power Sports in Flint and the K-Mart Parking lot in Bay City.

Carrie Downing, the Post Master at The Reese Post Office, said, " This is the 2nd year that we have brought the post office to the National Guard Armory for the postage of the care packages." Downing who was in the Navy for 6 years, said, "I've seen first hand when some soldiers did not receive anything, it is really sad."

Melissa Alex from the Yellow Ribbon Guard lost her husband, in 2006 while he was deployed overseas. Alex said, "I hope there will be a day where we will not have to do this, but I know that day will probably never come."

According to Alex, The former Send Santa to Baghdad was changed to 'Send Santa to the Troops to expand the mission to sending care packages to any Military member that will be deployed or stationed overseas during the holiday season. This includes places like Germany, Japan, Diego Garcia, etc.

On Monday, November 21, 2011 volunteers will be packing day at the Bay City Armory (on Wilder Rd. Bay City). Volunteers are needed to help ship our the care packages to the deployed soldiers, starting at 9AM

According to Alex $16,000 was the cost to send the care packages to the troops. "Every little donation helps!" said, Alex.
