Charity Ball Benefits Web-Based Patient Education Programs

This year's 54th Annual Charity Ball will take place at the DoubleTree Hotel and Conference Center in Bay City on Saturday, December 3, 2011. Proceeds from this year's Ball will be used toward the purchase of EMMI®, a web-based multimedia patient education program. EMMI gives patients a general overview of what they can expect before, during, and after their procedures, diagnostic tests, and surgeries. The program is available from any computer with internet access, and is accessible via password for patients, families, and physician offices to enhance understanding and patient satisfaction.

The theme of this year's Charity Ball is "Life, Love, Laughter." The event also includes a sweepstakes. Prizes include a first place cash prize of $1,000, donated by the BRMC Auxiliary; second place cash prize, also totaling $1,000, donated by the BRMC Auxiliary; third place prize is a 42" TV; fourth place is a cash prize of $500, donated by the BRMC Auxiliary, and the fifth prize includes 12 restaurant gift certificates from local restaurants ($400 value). Raffle tickets are $10 each or three for $25 and can be purchased at Bay Regional Medical Center's Gift Shop and the DoubleTree Hotel.

Charity Ball tickets are also available for purchase at Bay Regional's Gift Shop and the DoubleTree Hotel. The evening will begin with an open bar at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:15 p.m., followed by open bar and ball, with dancing, at 8:45 p.m. The evening's music is provided by "Skyline and the Backstreet Horns." Black tie invited. Discounted room rates are also available at the DoubleTree Hotel for the event.

  • Patron couple - Open bar, dinner and Ball: $250
  • Couple - Open -bar, dinner and Ball: $200
  • Single - Open bar, dinner and Ball: $100

    DIABETES EDUCATION CLASSES AT BAY REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

    A Diabetes Self-Care Education Program is offered through Bay Regional Medical Center. Sessions with a diabetes education nurse and registered dietitian are offered weekly. Topics include diabetes diagnosis and progression, meal planning and carbohydrate counting, knowing your numbers, preventing complications, stress management and goal setting.

    Our Diabetes Self-Care Education Program is certified by the State of Michigan Department of Community Health and has met the National Standards of the American Diabetes Association. Classes are held at the Lincoln Center, 820 South Lincoln, Bay City. For more information, please call (989) 894-9528.

    Bay Regional Medical Center Offers Prenatal Classes

    Bay Regional Medical Center offers a variety of prenatal programs for expectant parents and parents of newborns. Classes include:

  • Teen Pregnancy and Childbirth Series

    Bay Regional Medical Center Offers "Parkinson's Exercise & Movement" Class

    Bay Regional Medical Center's Center for Rehabilitation is pleased to offer a comprehensive low-cost exercise class designed for individuals living with Parkinson's Disease. "Parkinson's Exercise and Movement Class" is held each Wednesday from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 E. Midland Road, Bay City.

    Parkinson's disease is a chronic disorder of the brain that impairs a person's ability to move. Parkinson's causes damage to the part of the nervous system controlling movement, posture, and balance, resulting in stiffness, tremors, slowness, as well as difficulty with balance, walking and speaking. Exercise should be started as soon after diagnosis as possible. Inactivity results in muscle weakness and stiffness. Regular exercise helps to maintain quality of movement and muscle function.

    The Parkinson's Exercise and Movement Class consists of breathing exercises, stretching exercises, postural & balance exercises and proprioception exercises. The class is instructed by a specially-trained physical therapist assistant.

    Participants must bring a signed physician's approval before beginning the exercise program. A nominal fee of $2.00 per session is payable at each class.

    Support Groups offered by Bay Regional Medical Center

    The Amputee Support Group will meet on Tuesday, December 6, from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 East Midland Road in Bay City. The Amputee Support Group was formed to provide support and information for individuals with an amputation. There is no charge for the program and family members are encouraged to attend.     The Bay Area Cancer Support Group meets on the first Thursday of each month (December 1) from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in Conference Rooms A & B at the Center for Rehabilitation, BRMC West Campus, 3190 East Midland Road, Bay City. This group offers a friendly environment to allow open discussion for patients, families, and friends who are dealing with cancer. A registered social worker facilitates this group. Participants can learn about the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, as well as learn new coping skills. For more information, please call (989) 894-3180 or (989) 633-8451. Bay Regional Medical Center is a proud member of the Great Lakes Cancer Institute (GLCI).

    The Bay Area Stroke Support Group meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 13 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 East Midland Road, Bay City. The Bay Area Stroke Support Group was formed to provide support and information for individuals who have had a stroke. There is no charge for the program and family members are encouraged to attend.     Caring for Others meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 E. Midland Road in Bay City. The next meeting is Wednesday, December 14 at 6:00 p.m. This support group is designed is for individuals who have the responsibility of taking care of others, whether it is a family member or friend and is offered free of charge.     Bay Regional Medical Center's Postpartum Support Group: Mood Changes After Your Baby's Birth - You Are Not Alone will meet on the second Thursday of the month (December 8) from 7-8:30 p.m. in BRMC's Family BirthPlace Lounge, 3rd Floor, South Tower, 1900 Columbus Avenue, Bay City.

    This group offers a friendly environment to provide support and encouragement for mothers who may be struggling with adjusting to the postpartum period and becoming a new parent. Family members and friends are encouraged to attend as well. Participants can gain support and learn more about how to overcome the stresses commonly experienced during this challenging time. This postpartum time can become even more challenging if a mother develops Postpartum Depression or Mood Disorder, which may occur anytime during the first year following pregnancy. It is very important to expand your circle of support to make the most of this special year.

    "Embrace Your Heart," for individuals who have heart failure and their support persons, meets the second Thursday of each month at Bay Regional Medical Center, 1900 Columbus Avenue, Bay City, in the Small Café Conference Room (conference room adjacent to the Cafeteria). The next meeting is Thursday, December 8 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

    Each meeting will have a guest speaker, who will discuss topics such as: nutrition, medications, exercise, treatments, importance of self-care, emotional well being, tips for reducing strain on your heart and breathing easier, and ideas for talking with your healthcare provider. Participants are asked to bring a list of their current medications, including over-the-counter and vitamins, to every meeting. There is no fee to attend the support group. Heart Failure Patients are encouraged to attend with their support person. If you plan to attend the support group, please RVSP to Kelly Hartwell at (989) 894-6474.

    Heart Failure is a condition that affects nearly five million Americans of all ages and is responsible for more hospitalizations than all forms of cancer combined. Over 400,000 new cases of heart failure will be diagnosed in the next year.
