A 40 acre parcel of land along the Saginaw River near Downtown Bay City will undergo transformation beginning next year thanks to dedicated city leaders and Dr. Sam Shaheen, SSP Associates.

The parcel known as Uptown at RiversEdge, is across Saginaw Street from the new Dow Bay Area Family Y and the historic Bay City Hall which is under renovation. It is just a block away from a new medical center built by SSP Associates last year.

Dr. Shaheen's initial investment in the Uptown at RiversEdge development is $25 million to build a 100,000 sq. ft. mixed use complex that should provide employment for about 440 people. This is the first of several developments on the site.

Shops, apartments, offices and recreation and entertainment facilities will follow. The Bay City River Walk will also be expanded to run through the entire parcel.

Mayor Chris Shannon, the Bay City Commission and the RiversEdge Development Corporation, led by Bay City icon, Paul Rowley, deserve the thanks of the entire community for their positive commitment to this development that will transform the looks and the economy of this fantastic community.

There will be an additional $15 million in new infrastructure development, including roads, sewer, public river walk and moving Consumers Energy power lines and towers off the site.

The Uptown at RiversEdge development will be a transformational project for Bay City and enhance nearby areas of the city, including the Downtown and Columbus business districts.

The city has spent a lot of time trying to find the right developer who has a vision for the Uptown at RiversEdge property. By working with the local business community to create the RiversEdge Development Corporation, the city created a public-private partnership that helped remove the major obstacles to development, market the site and negotiate this sale.

Your Bay Area Chamber of Commerce thanks our governmental and business leaders who worked together to help make this major Bay City transformation possible.

Of course, your Chamber also thanks Dr. Sam Shaheen for his vision and major investment in this project and our community.
