Engineering and installation of plate anchors (see drawing below) are in process for the docking here of the museum ship USS Edson.

Mike Kegley, board president of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum, is making a plea to the community for $10 donations to close the inflation gap in funding.

In a letter to supporters, Mr. Kegley said the group hopes for 20,000 donations of $10 each to secure the vessel for Bay City.

To meet U.S. Navy requirements, the Bay County Growth Alliance has agreed to a $500,000 line of credit to support the cost of towing the 400 foot destroyer through the St. Lawrence Seaway from Philadelphia.

"All that remains is the final push to cover the start up costs that have inflated since our efforts began 14 years ago," wrote Mr. Kegley.

He said donations are tax deductible and donors of $10 or more will receive one free pass to board the USS Edson or a $10 credit in the SVNSM store.

The museum group is awaiting an East Coast engineer's plans for the plate anchors, estimated to cost $80,000 just for the hardware. Two plate anchors will be sunk with pile drivers into the riverbed and two will go on shore, according to Mr. Kegley.

All Navy approvals are in place and awaiting only the signature of the Secretary of the Navy, he added.

The group has posted a positive statement on its website indicating confidence that the ship will arrive in the spring.

"We've jumped through all the hoops, dotted and the i's and crossed all the T's, so there's no reason for further delay," said Richard J. Janke, vice president. "We look forward to declaring 'Mission Accomplished' and welcoming you aboard next spring," he said. ###

Another good 'plug' for the USS EDSON. Thanks for your loyalty, Dave.
