Wild Addiction host Tim Roller had just arrowed a beautiful Illinois whitetail. After finishing the video work and a photo session, Roller and cameraman Scott Close made a quick sweep around the farm to collect the Reconyx cameras they had up. The last one to come down was one Roller was especially interested in.
"We had hung this camera on a secluded inside corner of a cut bean field overlooking a huge primary scrape on a well used fence jump," recalled Roller. "It had only been there three days when we pulled it to go home. I popped the card in the computer and was blown away by the number of daytime pictures we had of mature bucks. I turned to Scott and told him right then we would kill one there when we returned in December with the muzzleloader."
Upon their return for Illinois' second gun season, Roller wasted little time returning to the "magic corner."
"Things had changed considerably in the five weeks since we were there." Roller commented. "There were now cattle grazing the cut bean field and they were everywhere. We still had to go back there and at least check it out and boy am I glad we did. There were four or five distinctly different giant tracks in that corner, and they were fresh. We immediately put the camera back up on the fence jump and hung a set just off the field edge."
After two days of completely wrong winds for hunting the spot, Roller knew time was quickly slipping away on the four day season. "We had a very questionable wind on the third day, but according to the forecast, it was the closest we were going to have in the last two days to hunt it. We put our faith that afternoon in our Dead Down Wind products. There is no doubt in my mind we don't kill that buck without adhering to the stringent scent control system we use, which includes the full line of Dead Down Wind products."
With twenty minutes of shooting light left, the wide mature 8 point entered the field. After backing down a couple of smaller bucks in the field, this buck began checking does that were in the field feeding. It was then that Roller made a perfect shot of just over 100 yards with his muzzleloader, ending the hunt that had begun 5 weeks earlier.
