Rob Clark
Rob Clark, editor for the Bay City Times, talked to Rotary about changes to the paper and to it's web site MLive.com. As all Bay Citians know, "The Paper" has experienced numerous changes over the past few years. Recently MLive has taken the lead and will be the parent organization for the statewide Booth news organization.

Rob, recent Bay City Rotary President, started his career at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Although he was a voice and music major, he edited The Knox Student newspaper. After graduation Rob realized that he didn't want a career in music but he loved newspapers. He sent out a hundred resumes and soon landed a job with Galva News.

Using various papers as examples Rob said that he, like everyone he knows, loves to hold a print newspaper in his hands. It's a comfortable, familiar fixture and has been for hundreds of years. At the same time, he's come to realize that he likes the electronic version of the news better. He can get it on his computer, his IPad, and his phone. It's available anywhere and anytime.

Commenting on the new generation, Rob noted that he interviews potential newspaper employees at colleges each year. He always asks where these young people get their news. This year every single one said, not just on the computer, but on Twitter!

The Times has gone through some dramatic changes. A couple of years ago the parent company said something like "Here's a lifeboat. See what you can do." The paper had to reinvent itself and has done so.

The new Times will operate under the MLive company. The various statewide papers will continue to be published but the overall company will have a wider organization. The local paper will continue to be printed at the Valley Technology center location, but the "news desk" there will relocate to Kalamazoo. The downtown Bay City Times office is being completely remodeled and will have a new staff focus. The paper will gain a Detroit office. Rotarian Kelly Frick is changing her job and taking on a statewide role. She'll be traveling among the offices continually.

Beginning in February MLive will roll out a completely new format and edition. Rob assured everyone that it will be more exciting visually and content-wise. It will also be easier to navigate.

The entire news staff is being trained to more effectively use the on-line media. Reader comments, an emotional topic for everyone, will become better with an active participation by the staff. Comments that shouldn't be there will be taken down. The staff will chime in with corrections, illumination and comments. Everyone will be encouraged to identify themselves and not speak with anonymity.

Rob is excited about the new look of the paper and MLive. He encouraged everyone to add their support, which will keep the local coverage coming.
