New signage scattered throughout Bay City aims to make navigation for locals and visitors a bit easier. The Wayfindings Signage Project has been three years in the making and was part of a larger initiative envisioned by the Center Avenue Neighborhood Association. Patty Stowell, Economic Development Marketing Manager for the City of Bay City coordinated efforts and gave a voice to the association as grants were sought to fund the project. "Visitors come and can't easily get around," Stowell stated, "We don't want people getting lost and frustrated."

After an extensive bidding process, Corbin Design, a wayfinding consulting group out of Traverse City, was selected to work with the committee to come up with a design, verbiage, and location for the signs. "We chose a nautical look because we felt that was the best reflection of what our city is about," says Stowell.

The Wayfindings Signage Project hosts a family of signs with various purpose and size. Stowell said, "The gateway sign is the first sign coming into the city and it must be large and visible." Beyond the large street signage you will also find signage for foot traffic and bike routes. "People use different modes of transportation and these signs are for everyone," explains Stowell.

You can now more easily direct guests to which side of the river you are on as the signs specifically denote an "East Riverfront" and a "West Riverfront." This is in hopes of saving the directionally challenged multiple trips across the bridge.

Many hours of hard work were put into the organization and the procurement of the signs with 18 successfully installed and 4 more slated to complete Phase I. Phase II comes with another round of signage covering multiple locations including: additional gateways to the community, the downtown area, Midland St., and surrounding parks, but will only be in place after securing additional grant funding.

As guests arrive for the Bay City Firework's 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Pig Gig, River Roar or any one of the great events the city hosts, visitors will surely come in with a better sense of direction as they see the fresh new signage leading them to their desired destination.
