Zehnder's Snowfest attracts snow carvers from all over the world, but also taps into the local talent that is represented by our very own tri-city area.

Heritage High School art teacher, William Chaltraw, is no stranger to the Zehnder's Snowfest Snow Sculpting Competition. He has been coaching a team of students for the last three years who have been competing in the high school division.

"Fish Eating the Fisherman" Almost Complete

Driven by his student's desire to up the ante and compete at a higher level, Chaltraw stopped instructing from the sidelines and picked up his tools to join in. "The students wanted to try and compete at the next level and it is hard to coach something you have never done," said Chaltraw, "When you are dealing with things like the elements it gets more complicated."

With unseasonably warm weather and then bone-chilling winds, Chaltraw's battle of the elements did not come without its rewards. His team took 1st place in the Michigan State Snow Sculpting Competition on his very first try and we are sure to see him again next year.

Outside of the state competition, sculptors from around the world dazzled the crowds with larger-than-life presentations. In the World Competition-Single Block the 1st place win went to a trio of sisters from Oakwood, OH with their "Owl & Mouse" sculpture. The 2nd place winners were a team all the way from France with their sculpture, "The Secret." Rounding out the 3rd place win was a team from Columbus, OH, with their rendition of "Rub-a-Dub-Dub."

In the World Snow Sculpting Competition-Double Block category, the winner and People's Choice Award went to "Tiki Hut" a USA/Michigan/Florida team. The 2nd place prize went to the USA/Flint team that created "Squid and Submarine." The 3rd place team in this division went to "Scuba Diver," by the USA/Canada team.

The Zehnder's Snowfest is a great way to entertain the entire family and excite the imagination of little ones with what can be created from a simple block of ice or snow. Every year continues to push the limits of creativity and possibility and we look forward to what next year brings.
