Catholic schools nationwide participated in Catholic Schools Week, an annual event that focuses on giving back to the community, showing appreciation for the Catholic education, and a whole lot of fun. "Catholic School Week is about celebrating the gift the Catholic education is to the families that participate and the community itself." says Administrator of Schools, Michael Knoff.

Catholic Schools Week officially kicked off locally with the "Share a Pair" fundraiser at the All Saints vs. Vassar basketball game. Coaches went barefoot and fans brought in new or gently used shoes to bring awareness to those who cannot afford them. The event exceeded expectations by raising $600 in monetary donations and 200 pairs of shoes. All donations went to the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission.

The fun and charity continued throughout the week as St. James Elementary students hosted a Bowl-a-thon for charity at Bay Lanes and made Valentines for veterans at the Saginaw Veteran's Hospital. Holy Trinity students brought personal care products that were also donated to the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission and the Saginaw Veteran's Hospital. "These events are about having fun, but also using these moments to teach the children what it is for, being generous and giving back," stated Knoff.

Other enjoyable events for the students included a trip to Delta Community College pool and more bowling fun for Holy Trinity students, Family Reading Night and Shadow Your Child Day for parents and grandparents at St. John's Elementary, and Special Person Day at St. James Elementary were children invited a special guest to read and enjoy a treat. However, unanimously, the highlight of the week goes to the All Bay Area Catholic School's Mass with every school participating in the service at St. Hyacinth's Church. "Each school has a unique culture, but when we get together there is a oneness," states Sue Grzegorczyk, Principal of St. John's Elementary.

As Catholic School's week comes to an end for another year, it is assured that the celebration is just a highlight of what the entire year is about. Grzegorczyk sums it up like this, "In Catholic schools everyone feels a part of what is going on not just this week, but all the time. We are celebrating what we are throughout the year."
