On Saturday, February 18, the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce awarded Spence Brothers with the prestigious Corporate Community Service Award for its contributions of leadership, service, volunteers and philanthropy to the community and the Great Lakes Bay Region. Herb Spence, III, President and CEO of Spence Brothers accepted the award on behalf of 119-year-old company.

Founded in 1893, Spence Brothers philosophy has always been to grow the business based upon earning the trust of their customers through quality service and dependability. Today, the Spence Brothers legacy, as a trusted leader in construction management, design/build and general contracting services throughout Michigan, continues.

An important part of the Spence Brothers corporate vision is to encourage employees to make a real difference by sharing their success with co-workers, families, project partners and the community. Spence Brothers employees can be found working at Riverfront Cleanup Day, constructing ramps for handicapped residents, bowling for the cure and "Living United". The list of service and support is long and includes a wide variety of community service groups throughout the county, region and state. As a group, Spence Brothers is dedicated to the on-going transformation and rebirth of Saginaw.

For the past three years, a team from Spence Brothers has worked to raise funds for the United Way organization beyond their own internal pledges. They have supported a yearly raffle by soliciting prizes, selling tickets and raising funds. In addition, employees gathered items and staged a "trash to treasures" sale to further aid United Way during an economically challenging campaign year.

Longtime members of PRIDE in Saginaw, Spence Brothers has supported the group with construction trailers for use as dressing rooms as well as fencing and labor for the Ice Blast and Friday Night Live Events.

Support for the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce has been absolute. Employees are regular participants in the Leadership Saginaw County Program, fixtures at the Annual Golf Outing, members of the Young Professionals Network and active participants on the Chamber's Board of Directors.

The company is a recognized supporter of education in Saginaw County - from foundation to education. Employees have volunteered their time and talents to improving the school system and making safe, stable and desirable neighborhoods. They participate in the READ Program. Their support of summer recreation programs has been instrumental in assisting organizations, such as the Saginaw Art Museum, to provide opportunities for at-risk youth to realize their full potential.

The Saginaw County Chamber Chairman's Ball drew over 520 community business leaders and young professionals to recognize Spence Brothers achievements and community contributions as well as to say farewell to outgoing Chamber Board Chair Terry Lerash, former CEO of Synergy Medical Education Alliance. Lerash, who is now the Director of Innovation for Covenant HealthCare served as Chamber Board Chair for 2011 and was responsible for driving the Chamber's current 5-year strategic plan.

He was honored with a choreographed flash mob that danced to the theme song from the 90's sitcom Friends, "I'll Be There For You' written by the Rembrandts. The black-tie optional fundraiser for the Chamber featured a Wild West theme brought to life by Paper Moon Event Specialists complete with a western town, mooing cows, cowboys, saloon girls and a costumed Mr. Ed who helped open the program. The event, which included dinner, cocktails, a live band and a play casino is one of the Chambers largest fundraising efforts for the year.
