Members of the Bay City Garden Club have a rich history of consciously enhancing the beauty of Bay City. Founded in 1927, this group of plant loving philanthropists works tirelessly year after year to make your experience in Bay City a little more special. Chances are if you have been down to the Kantzler Memorial Arboretum at Veterans Memorial Park or the Outdoor Reading Garden at the Alice and Jack Wirt Library, you have seen a sample of their work.

To the President of the Bay City Garden Club, Shelley Patterson, the sole mission of the group is not entirely dedicated to digging in the dirt, it includes education and conservation. "We want to help educate people about plants, gardening, and landscape design," says Patterson, "We also promote the education of conservation including programs on how to use organic products and making your own compost."

The group, including 57 active members and 28 associate members, has quite an extensive amount of knowledge to share. Each year they sponsor the Learning Tree Program which aims to educate children who are attending the Community Center's Enrichment Program about trees. It includes indoor class time and then the children are released to the arboretum to use their new found knowledge to identify trees during a scavenger hunt. Over 1300 children have participated in this program since its creation.

Coming May 15th-17th, the Bay City Garden Club will be educating, entertaining and stimulating the local economy as 8 other garden clubs from Indiana, Ohio and Southern Michigan will converge on to Bay City with the America Zone X Meeting. Patterson is extremely enthusiastic about this opportunity as they will be taking meeting attendants to various places in the area including the Delta College Planetarium, Tobico Marsh, and a historical overview down the Saginaw River on the Bay City Islander to name a few. "We are excited to show off what Bay City has to offer," says Patterson.

This summer the Bay City Garden Club will also reach the culmination of their hard work and fund raising efforts as they begin the final development of the southwest section of the Kantzler Memorial Arboretum at the Veterans Memorial Park. Patterson says, "This portion will tie in the Trombley House to the existing project as a way to encourage the community to experience the beautiful herb gardens and the history at the Trombley House."

Proceeds from the 2012 Garden Walk being held Thursday, June 21st from 11AM-7PM will make the completion of the project possible. Tickets will be on sale for $10 before the event or $12 the day of. Please check their website at www.baycitygardenclub.com for additional information on participating homeowners and local establishments selling tickets.

If you are interested in seeing firsthand what the Bay City Garden Club has to offer, there is one meeting a year that is open to the public and it is being held Monday, April 16th at the Alice and Jack Wirt Library. Speakers Steve Ingersoll and Tim Hunnicutt will be presenting, "Building Community through Restoration." Refreshments will be served at 5:30PM with the presentation from 6:00PM-7:30PM.
