Local Lutheran school students and teachers took a break from the norm to celebrate the unity of the Lutheran community nationwide during Lutheran Schools Week, March 5-10th. "This kind of week gives us an opportunity to share the love of Jesus with the kids and the community in a fun way," says Janet LaRocque, Principal of Zion Lutheran and Immanuel Lutheran schools in Bay City, "We have fun every day, but you usually don't walk out in the hall and see a bunch of kids in pajamas and crazy spiked hair."

Each of the schools had fun events planned throughout the week and silly themed days such as crazy hair day, school pride day, athletic wear day, and pajama day. Zion Lutheran School kicked off their week with the viewing of Toy Story 3 for the kindergarten through 8th graders in the gymnasium. The students cuddled up in blankets and wore their favorite plaid, striped or polka dot outfits. Parents of the P.T.L. passed out popcorn and juice to provide the true movie experience.

On Tuesday, students from 24 schools with representation from Bay City, Saginaw, Midland, Flint and the Thumb area came together for a worship service at Saginaw Valley State University's Ryder Center. This event only takes place once every three years and LaRocque sees this as the highlight of the week. "The students know that this is a fun week, but when we worship together it helps them get a visual that it is more than just our school," states LaRocque, "It is really the culmination of our celebration and representation of the unity that the week represents."

Giving back to the community was also in the plans for Zion Lutheran during their week of celebration. Students passed out bagels to parents as they dropped their children off in the morning and donations of toilet paper was collected for the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission. A collection was also taken from all the schools at the worship service at the Ryder Center to support the victims impacted by a tornado in the still recovering Joplin, MO.

A very special event for the 5th-8th graders from various local Lutheran schools rounded out the week with a concert at the State Theater in downtown Bay City. Nationally renowned Christian rapper, B.Reith, had the students on their feet and having a blast as he sang the afternoon away and closed out a momentous week that will not be soon forgotten.
