Believe you me, I have a lot of opinions.
Let's face it, we all do.
However, if I did some pseudo self-analysis, I would have to say I DO have a lot of actual beliefs, as well.
They may have a few holes in theory, here and there, but overall, I'm comfortable with them.
For instance, I believe 100%, that during the month with the extra paycheck, a tire on my car will pick a nail, the washer will break and I'll lose my cell phone, thereby ruining my chances of padding my Christmas Club account with a little extra holiday spending cash.
I also know for a fact, that the bin I store my summer clothes in, shrinks them from year to year. There can be no other explanation for their reduced size.
One thought is it could be from the humidity level in my basement, which is known to diminish denim shorts and summer skirts, but I also have another theory.
I believe that the plastic tubs I store them in leech a half size from June to June. Something about the chemical compounds and the makeup of the transparent plastic and their close storage proximity to the solid red plastic Christmas decoration bins.
An unexplainable scientific 'fissure' of sorts, creates an ensuing fabric reducing effect. I'm pretty sure I read that online somewhere...
(OK, OK, yes I know it's a hard theory to swallow, but I'm sticking with that story. Indulge me and let's just move on.)
I am quite certain that my son believes he knows more than me, even though he's only 15 years old. Yet I personally believe that although he IS a very smart young man, a good deal of the time he is dead wrong.
We have daily 'discussions', [ergo: heated debates], regarding our own personal depths of knowledge, on a host of subjects. Even though he puts up a pretty good argument at times, I am generally right.
Not only by virtue of my having a few decades of experience on him, but because of that big title I hold over his head.
You know the one.
"Because I'm your MOTHER, that's why."
For instance, I believe he won't get his allowance for playing video games and ignoring that the trash needs to go out. I believe if he is disrespectful to me, he will lose a privilege. I believe if he wants a car any time in the near future, he had best be signed up with an employer for an annual W-2 form and be in need of an accountant come next January, to file 2012 annual income taxes.
However, in spite of the litany parental/teen debates we go thru regularly, I whole-heartedly, without a doubt in my mind, believe he is the GREATEST thing that ever happened to me.
Although technically, that may not be a 'belief'.
That's God's truth.
I guess in life we all have our 'big' beliefs that shape our character, make us who we are and act as our moral compass in a sometimes confusing world.
They are the foundation of the things we'll always stand up for and are found so deeply entrenched in our being, that no one can dissuade them from us.
We can also have lesser known 'little' beliefs, that are just tiny, inconsequential factors that waltz into the dance of our daily lives.
They may create grins, groans, headaches or giggles at their outcome and don't actually have a whole heck of a lot to do with the greater scope of the meaning of life.
They can be beliefs that are nothing more than little superstitions, habits or personal opinions. They have no lasting performance value on the recital that is our life.
Therefore, I believe I'll not put too much merit on the little things and will stick to my convictions on the big issues in my life.
When push comes to shove, I know where the important beliefs live in my heart and really, that's all I need to know.
So, with that said, I do believe I'll have another glass of wine.
