McLaren-Bay Region Earns Infant Safety Recognition

McLaren-Bay Region's Family BirthPlace has been recognized by insurance giant Aetna for its commitment to early elective delivery infant safety. This recognition signifies that McLaren-Bay Region has put certain policies and/or procedures in place that address the risks posed to infants through elective delivery prior to 39 completed weeks of pregnancy. Elective deliveries include non urgent, scheduled deliveries where the mother did not present in labor and deliveries where the timing of the delivery or labor induction is for non medical reasons. These policies and programs addressing timing of elective deliveries are consistent with the goals of nationally recognized professional and quality organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the March of Dimes, and the Leapfrog Group.

The recognition requires putting quality improvement activities in place to including establishing policies around scheduling of elective deliveries prior to 39 completed weeks of pregnancy, tracking and reporting on conditions of infants electively delivered at the hospital and physician level of detail, provision of information to members concerning the timing of elective delivery, and participation with external improvement or reporting programs, such as Leapfrog or Joint Commission.

"We are pleased to be recognized by Aetna for our infant safety program as it relates to pre-39 week elective deliveries," said Patti Krenz, RN, Manager of the hospital's Family BirthPlace and Pediatric Units. "We strive to improve quality, and this is recognition that those efforts have paid off."

McLaren-Bay Region will receive a special designation in the Elective Delivery Infant Safety Program on Aetna's online directory, DocFind.
