Something happened to my memory between ages 30 and 40 and it's been downhill ever since.
I don't think I've forgotten anything of major consequence, like a family birthday or to attend someone's wedding or anything of that nature.
But then, I've probably forgotten if I forgot.
It would be interesting to know the real reasons the mind works the way it does. Remembering precisely what you wore to the first day of 5th grade, but not recalling where you left your sunglasses from 2 hours ago, is a puzzling mystery.
I've forgotten to return phone calls, mail Christmas cards, when I've last washed my favorite jeans and where they might possibly be now within my humble abode.
I've forgotten what I was going to say, what I had for lunch, that my son had the day off of school and many, many times have forgotten that I really don't care for iced tea.
Until I have it again, my taste buds rebel and I remember that I don't like it.
I think (and hope) I'm remembering the important stuff.
Appreciating the kindness of friends who lift me up when I'm feeling low.
Always remembering the ones who can be counted on to encourage and support me, who have realized that even though I'm a bit of a cracked egg, I am however, still a good egg.
The beauty in nature.
To never take myself or others too seriously and that humor and laughter really can be the best medicine.
I may forgot more 'things' as I age and move along on my path of life, but hopefully they will be inconsequential and minor.
The whereabouts of my sunglasses may come and go, but I will strive to remember the great and noble things in life. The things that really matter.
Such as, to thank the many hundreds of thousands of men and women who have served or continue to serve our great country.
If our memory doesn't serve us as it should, Memorial Day reminds us not to take our freedom for granted. It reminds us that the brave souls who stand guard for us all, shall never be forgotten.
God Bless America and God bless it's courageous citizens.
