The water drawn by the City of Bay City from Saginaw Bay has long been considered inferior to the Saginaw-Midland source at Whitestone, near AuGres.

Water, water, everywhere -- and lots of uncertainty about the future source, too.

As the community is increasingly faced with the need to add treatment schemes to make sure Bay City's water potable, the silence about a proposed new source from Whitestone Point through the Saginaw-Midland Water System has been deafening.

The first step is joining the City of Bay City and Bay County's Department of Water and Sewer (DWS), agencies not always on the same page.

Now one county commissioner, Tom Ryder, wants to know what is happening. So DWS representatives are slated to appear Tuesday at 4 p.m. before the board of commissioners to provide an update on the city-county cooperation.

The city has been sending out periodic, carefully parsed reports to all users explaining the added treatments, the latest calculated to help keep lead pipes and connections from dissolving.

Saginaw and Midland have indicated privately a willingness to consider a merger, or providing water to Bay City-Bay County on a customer basis, but nothing has been set in stone.

In fact, besides MyBayCity.com, news agencies have shown remarkable restraint in reporting on the proposal.

Bay City Mayor Chris Shannon assures us that the new arrangement is in the pipeline, that talks are proceeding privately, but the cloak and dagger approach is not enlightening to local resident water users.

Some township supervisors have indicated they want to step up the pressure to get the deal done, to finally end a half-century of fumbling over the proposed tri-county plan.

Monitor Township, especially, is eager to tap into the Lake Huron-based system that has a main pumping station right next door to the township hall. And representatives of Hampton Township and Essexville also are eager to see a collaborative effort finally take root.

Cheers to Commissioner Ryder for pushing the city-county cooperation issue. Perhaps the report from DWS will also shed some light on the progress, or lack thereof, on obtaining better quality water from Whitestone Point through the Saginaw-Midland system.

One can only hope the Chinese water torture drip-drip-drip of information on proposed collaboration ends soon.
