Reflections on Jeff Julian and the Aurora Colorado Massacre

A murderer in Bay City, Michigan, tells the media we place too much value on life.
A maniac in Aurora, Colorado, buys assault rifles and 6,000 rounds of ammunition and slays a dozen people in a crowded theater.
The two are not related -- or are they?
The mentality of Jeff Julian, and of Aurora's James Holmes, both in their early 20s, appear in sync even though Julian strangled his victim and Holmes gunned them down.
Julian's statements indicated he felt he should be exonerated because the murder of a young woman was the only crime he ever committed, according to him.
Holmes appeared to be a normal young man, studying medicine of all things, who was not a hardened criminal. But they both seem to have been infected with the same mental disease that considers human life worthless.
That mentality and the philosophy also meshes with that of a gun cult that has seized political power in this country, buoyed by the fund-raising power of a group called "the National Rifle Association."
The NRA pushes hard at all levels of government to allow sales of every type of weapon without controls of any kind. Gun shows are the worst for untrammeled trafficking in over-the-top weaponry.
Are we in fact teaching our young people not to value life? Are we our own worst enemies in the name of being "true Americans"?
One respondent to a tweet on the Huffington Post revealed the thinking pattern of the gun lobby. "Blame the gun. Typical liberal."
Yes, the gun, and the nut, are to blame. Without the gun and the piles of ammo, the gun nut could not have wreaked havoc and mayhem as he did.
And without the political support from the NRA and other right-wing groups enabling him, the gun nut Holmes would have had only six shots instead of dozens. If he had been slowed in his quest for guns and ammo, perhaps he would not have perpetrated the horrific violence as he did.
If he is indeed an incorrigible homicidal maniac, how many people could he have killed with his bare hands?
The long philosophical battle over gun rights has been escalated to the point where common sense has been submerged, where so-called "conservatives" and "Second Amendment advocates" -- have lost their respect for human life -- like Jeff Julian and James Holmes.
If they did, at least they would see the wisdom in limiting assault weapons and ammo clips that hold dozens of bullets, like the shooter in Arizona a couple of years ago who killed half a dozen including a federal judge and put a shot through the brain of a conscientious Member of Congress.
When Sarah Palin put bullseye targets on Congressional districts on her website -- including that of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords -- and speaks of "Second Amendment rights as solutions to political conflicts, as did a Senate candidate in Nevada also, doesn't that give sanction to the marginal types?
Pima County, Arizona, Sheriff Clarence Dupnik -- the antithesis of Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Phoenix -- repeatedly cited what he characterized as the "vitriol" that has infected political discourse. He said that his own state has become "the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."
The mayor of Aurora says the shooting was "an isolated" incident. Please, Mr. Mayor, no, what happened in Aurora was not an isolated incident. This kind of shooting is a far too regular occurrence in America. Has the mayor forgotten Columbine? Wasn't that in Colorado, too?
And how about 13 gun deaths at Ft. Hood in 2009, 32 at Virginia Tech in 2007? 6 in Seattle 2008?
According to radio commentator Bill Moyers, "every year there are 30,000 gun deaths and 300,000 gun-related assaults in the U.S. Firearm violence may cost our country as much as $100 billion a year. Toys are regulated with greater care and safety concerns."
The mayor of Aurora had the unmitigated gall to go to Columbine and put his hands on 15 crosses erected there to commemorate the victims of the 1999 mass shooting at Columbine High School. What a hypocritical travesty, Mr. Mayor!
Does it really take a "typical liberal" to realize the dangers of the gun cult gone wild? Why is any opposition to any type of gun or killing capability somehow "wimpy," liberal, unAmerican?
If we have come to that in America, we have lost our values. We have lost the will to restrain maniacs in the name of "freedom."
Have we twisted the U.S. Constitution to allow any wacko to shoot up everybody in town in the name of liberty?
Blame the gun? Yes, but blame the cult of the gun, blame the NRA that lobbies legislators with millions of dollars to allow the gun nuts license to indulge their Satanic fantasies and turn them to bloody realities like just witnessed in Colorado. ###
