Ex-Congressman Bart Stupak Now Lobbyist; Speaks Aug. 15 in California

Bart Stupak, former Member of Congress representing part of Bay County and northern Michigan, is now a Washington lobbyist.

Mr. Stupak, Robert L. Smith, II and Sam Olchyk will present "Lights! Camera! Action! Time to Prepare for the 2012 Federal Elections," at the Professional Advisory Network Quarterly Luncheon of the Motion Picture & Television Fund. The presentation is slated Aug. 15 in the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills, California.

Mr. Stupak, an attorney, is a partner in the Venable LLP's Legislative and Government Affairs group.

He specializes in matters related to energy, healthcare, telecommunications and international trade.

While in Congress, Mr. Stupak served on the Energy and Commerce Committee for 16 years. During his tenure on the Energy and Commerce Committee, he served on a number of subcommittees, including Health, Energy and the Environment, Communications, Technology and the Internet, Consumer Protection, Commerce and Trade, and Oversight and Investigations.

As Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, Mr. Stupak helped lead investigations into key issues, such as physical and cyber security breaches at U.S. nuclear labs, food and drug safety, and insurance company rescissions of insurance policies. He also played an important role in the passage of H.R. 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. Additionally, Mr. Stupak served on the Armed Services, Government Reform and Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committees.

Prior to joining the U.S. House of Representatives, Mr. Stupak worked in private practice in Michigan. Mr. Stupak began his career in public service as a police officer in Escanaba, Michigan. He continued his career in law enforcement as a Michigan State Police Trooper until he was medically retired due to an injury sustained in the line of duty. He also served in the Michigan House of Representatives.

In spring 2011, Mr. Stupak was a Fellow at the Institute of Politics, Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government.

He is a member of the Fellows Alumni Advisory Council, Institute of Politics, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Board of Directors, Lansing, Michigan; Ethics Resource Center, Board of Directors, Washington, DC; Leadership Advisory Committee Member for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University.

Best political story I ever saw in this publication, or any regional one, was the one about Stupak's DC "frathouse" and the contents of his personal trunk there. Made a point of circulating it to friends around the country, for Stupak was in the national news at that point.
