How Tough Could It Be?

Sunday afternoon . . . I watched Bull Riding on Television.

I don't know why . . . so stop wondering . . . and don't send the question through Facebook.

Anyway . . . it got me thinking as to how much a Bull Rider can make for climbing on the back of a 2,000 pound angry piece of steak. Best as I can tell . . . and this is after just a few quick minutes of Google research . . . A Bull Rider can make as much as $400,000 per year for riding a piece of meat. I had no idea.

How Tough Can 8 Seconds Be?
This is inside counselor information I could have used back in 1960 when I (like many of us) chose the path of college education + military service + going to work on the average of 60-70 hours per week for the next 60 years. (We chose poorly)

Don't get me wrong.

I don't begrudge anyone their $400,000 annual salary.

In fact, I always expected to be making that much (by now) from movie and television residual payments from books I should have written that would certainly have been made into blockbuster, award-winning epic movies -- starring Will Smith and Sandra Bullock.

OK . . . Never happened . . . But it could have.

And . . . Just so you know . . . Books take a long time to write.

I'm not making excuses.

Actually . . . I've been talking and planning about some book-writing for almost 30 years now and I'm thinking that I'm getting pretty damn close to getting it done . . . er, ahh, er . . . this year.

But (like I said) books take a long time to write . . . Even at 3,000 words per day, it's going to take almost 4 months to crank out a 300 page New York Times Best Seller. And at a mere 1,000 words a day . . . Well . . . It would take . . . like . . . maybe a year.

That's why this bull riding thing got my attention.

I'm thinking . . . "EASY MONEY."

Because . . . Bull Riders only work 8 seconds a day.

That's Right . . . 8 seconds.

Got me thinking as to why is the ride only 8 seconds?

Like . . . Who decided? Get This . . . (According to Google) The 8 second length was devised purely for the safety and well-being of the animals involved. According to my research . . . . after 8 seconds, the bull's bucking ability decreases because of fatigue, adrenaline loss, etc.

So . . . . (More Google) to prevent the animal from becoming overly stressed, the buzzer or horn sounds after 8 seconds to signal the rider to end the ride and get the hell off. This keeps the animals spirit high and healthy and keeps them from 'breaking' or taming down.

The more I thought about it . . . 8 seconds hardly seemed like a very big deal to me.

So I did the math . . . Because that's what Cunninghams do . . .

MATH!

Come to find out . . . If I rode a wild bull for 8 seconds every day for a year . . . I would (ONLY) work a total of 48.6 MINUTES in an ENTIRE year.

MINUTES . . . !!!

Are You Listening?

MINUTES !!!

NOT EVEN ONE HOUR IN A WHOLE FREAKING YEAR

Let's Review . . . $400,000 . . . 8 seconds per day . . . 48+ Minutes per Year.

Look at it this way.

It just took me over an HOUR to write this column.

If I was a Bull Rider . . . I'd be done until August 19, 2013.

For the rest of the year . . . All I got left to do . . . Is check the mail and see if that $400,000 check gets delivered.
