I couldn't help but notice that July 5, 2002 marks the 26th anniversary of the first issue of the Bay County Sports Page. If you're old enough to remember that bi-weekly newspaper . . . well, you have my condolences.
In 1976, I was pretty much aone-man band. Not so today. Office staff, production managers, graphic designers, internet programmers - they are truly the mainstays . . . and make it all a reality.
We recently moved our operation from Morton Street to Center Avenue after 18 years on the west side of the river in the old Prestolite Credit Union. Moving causes you to pack and uncover old items that you might not otherwise see. It was my job to pack up the old issue of Sports Page and Bay City Enterprise, and get them back in chronological order for the move to downtown Bay City. I couldn't help but sit down and read some of the first issues.
In this week's edition of MyBayCity.com, you will find a new series called
Flashback It was quite a nostalgic moment to turn the pages of newspapers published over a quarter of a century ago. It was more than fun to re-visit the stories and to share some of the pictures from that early edition. We will continue to run someting from the old papers on a continuing basis. I hope you enjoy the walk down memory lane.
Advertiser names like Pat's Place, Cubby's Bar (Helen Norton), Pickle Barrel (John Ruterbusch), Peoples National Bank (Mel Kent) brought back fond memories. My friends at Green Hut (Denny Hayes), Bell Bar (Tom Borkowski) and Arrow TV (Bob & Bill Turk) are still around. Time travel is always fun.
I'm a lot older than I was in 1976. Perhaps a little wiser. Butthe concept of this electronic magazine/newspaper is still the same. We'll try to be interesting. And we'll try to have an independent point of view. There is so much to be done.
I'm looking forward to our next issue already.
