Thinking Out Loud
Spicing It Up

"Once you get a spice in your home, you have it forever. Women never throw out spices. The Egyptians were buried with their spices. I know which one I'm taking with me when I go."
Erma Bombeck

I found marjoram in my cupboard from 1993.

Of course it was full, nobody ever uses marjoram. Besides, I hate cooking and have no recollection of why I would have even purchased marjoram.

In recent months, most likely due to seeing several episodes of 'Hoarders' on Netflix and cringing in horror, I've become quite conscious of what I save and what I throw out.

A clean sweep of my closets recently produced a sizable donation bag of too tight skirts, too large pants and a rather matronly bathrobe, among other "I'll never wear this again" items.

On a recent excursion and dig of my basement, several discoveries were exhumed and deemed worthless. The broken picture frame, a pool float (I don't have a pool), several worn out gift bags and a box of old t-shirts.

My cupboard really stumped me though.

The box of spices ranging in age from the geriatric marjoram, ten year old basil, dusty clove, to recently purchased nutmeg, baffle me. Why am I hanging on to spices that are older than my teenager and more importantly, why am I buying them in the first place??

It's a mystery to me when as exotic as I usually get while cooking is to use salt and pepper.

Maybe we are like the Egyptians in our love of spices, or maybe we just hate throwing things out we think we'll use someday. But I think I'm going to break the chain of frivolous spending on spices I know I will ever need.

I will say goodbye to the bottle of marjoram with a moment of regret, but will just move on. I may even toss the basil, the clove and the decrepit looking jar of oregano while I'm at it.

All I ask, is that none of you send me any recipes for a while, so I don't fall off the self-imposed wagon of new spices entering my kitchen.

And please, no one ask me to borrow a tablespoon of marjoram.

That would just be cruel.
