Abraham Lincoln, as played by Fred Priebe, will speak in Bay City on April 21.

Abraham Lincoln will speak in Bay City on Thursday, April 21, 2005.

However, we all know he died 140 years ago April 15 after being shot by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre, Washington, D.C.

But Fred Priebe of Belleville, Michigan, looks so much like Lincoln that if you attend the Annual Civil War Round Table dinner in Bay City you may feel his august presence.

The event will be held at the Stein Haus in the Edelweiss Room with cash bar and social hour beginning at 5 p.m., dinner following. Cost is $20 with reservations due by Friday, April 15 at 892-1136.

The annual Abraham Lincoln Death Day Observance will be held Friday, April 15, 2005, at the Abraham Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site located in historic Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois. This will be the 49th annual observance, commemorating the 140th anniversary of Pres. Lincoln's death.

Lincoln (Mr. Priebe) will be the main speaker at the annual dinner, discussing the fascinating details of the Presidential Election of 1864.

One of the more crucial elections in the nation's history, the election of 1864 pitted Honest Abe against his upstart challenger, Gen. George B. McClellan.

Was it a grudge match? Some would say so, since Mr. Lincoln had fired the arrogant McClellan for poor performance at the head of the Union Army. McClellan had "the slows" Lincoln had charged in frustration over the boy general's failure to prosecute the war to his, and the nation's, satisfaction.

The election had significance for Bay County since it was the second Presidential vote in the history of the county, formed in 1857. It was a chance for a reputedly strong abolitionist area to assert its support for the Northern cause. However, Lincoln lost to McClellan, as he had lost to Senator Steven A. Douglas in the previous election, in 1860, the first Presidential election held in this county. Bay County was heavily Democratic and it showed at the ballot box.

Fred Priebe's Lincoln travels has taken him all over the Midwest and eastern United States since 1996. The program is varied to suit the audience and the situation. He presents in the 'first person' emphasizing Lincoln's honesty, integrity, patriotism, duty to one's country and faith in God.

Fred is often accompanied by his wife, Bonnie, who plays Mary Todd Lincoln. The Priebes are listed in the current Touring Arts Directory of the Michigan Humanities Council.

A recent presentation was toa standing room only crowd at the Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Fred presents the 16th President as part of the 'Democracy on the Green' project at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. Internationally, they have presented Lincoln in Australia, Canada, England and France.

Fred and Bonnie have been educators in public and private schools for over 30 years.

Recent awards received by the Priebes include the Best Abe-Mary Team for 2001 and the Best Mary Todd Lincoln for 2001.

In Springfield, the Lincoln death commemoration ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and will be followed at 1 p.m. by a luncheon at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3000 S. Dirksen Drive. The Tomb ceremony is free and open to the public. Luncheon tickets are available at a cost of $24.00 per person and must be pre-paid. Luncheon reservations must be made by April 1. Mr. Daniel Weinberg, proprietor of the Abraham Lincoln Bookstore in Chicago, will be the luncheon speaker.

Reservations payable to the John A. McClernand Camp #4 should be mailed to:

Ronald E. Clark

Transportation via chartered motorcoach will depart at 10:15 a.m. from the Crowne Plaza to the Tomb and will return to the hotel following the wreath laying.

This year's headquarters hotel is the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3000 S. Dirksen Drive. Hotel reservations may be made by calling (217) 529-7777.
