Saginaw Valley State University has been included on the Military Friendly Schools list for the second straight year. Selected by Victory Media, the list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America?s military service members, veterans and spouses as students, and ensure their success on campus

The 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools was released Monday, Sept. 17. It was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The survey tabulation process, methodology and weightings that comprise the 2013 list were independently verified by Ernst and Young LLP.

SVSU currently has 162 students who are receiving veteran's benefits. The Cardinal Military Association, a registered student organization at SVSU, is an affiliate of Student Veterans of America, a coalition of student veteran groups on college campuses across the United States. In April, the association raised funds to support Travis Mills, an injured veteran from Vassar.

In addition, SVSU recently was approved for two student work-study positions through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The University has increased attention on current and former military personnel and their dependents since a visit in 2010 by former U.S. Marine Jose Coll. After his visit, a task force of SVSU students and administrators evaluated programs and resources for this category of students.

A full story and detailed list of Military Friendly Schools will be highlighted in the annual "Guide to Military Friendly Schools," which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October. The full list of 2013 Military Friendly Schools can be viewed at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com.

Victory Media is a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business founded in 2001. Victory's free, data-driven, Military Friendly ® lists can be found online. Victory's lists are also published in G.I. Jobs, Military Spouse, Vetrepreneur magazines, republished in national and local periodicals and are frequently cited on national and local TV stations.
