Tennessee Coach Pat Summitt, center, flanked at left by Dean Lockwood, has surpassed North Carolina's Dean Smith as the all-time winningest basketball coach.

When the University of Tennessee meets Michigan State University's women's basketball team on Sunday night in the NCAA semi-finals, former Bay Cityan Dean Lockwood will be on the bench for the Lady Vols.

Lockwood serves as assistant to Coach Pat Summitt, who recently surpassed Dean Smith of North Carolina with more all-time wins, hitting the 880 mark with a 75-54 victory over Purdue in the second round of the NCAA women's tournament. Her team defeated Rutgers 59-49 in the Philadelphia RegionalTuesday night to gain the semi-finals against MSU.

The Spartans under Coach Joanne P. McCallie advanced to the semifinals in Indianapolis with a 76-69 win over Stanford in the Kansas City Regional Tuesday night.

Last July Coach Summitt announced the hiring of Lockwood (pictured at right) as an assistant coach replacing former assistant coach Greg Brown, who took a high school coaching job.

Summitt's record has improved to 882-171, while Smith was 879-254 when he retired in 1997 after 36 years with the Tar Heels.

After the Purdue game, NCAA officials presented Summitt with the game ball and a plaque. And the university announced the court at Thompson-Boling Arena will be named "The Summitt."

Top-seeded Tennessee (28-4), is seeking its seventh national title under Summitt. The Lady Vols defeated fourth-seeded Texas Tech in the semifinals of the Philadelphia Regional on Sunday.

Summitt overtook Texas' Jody Conradt as the winningest women's college coach early in the 2002-03 season.

She holds nearly every NCAA tournament record for a women's coach including most NCAAtitles (six), Final Four appearances (15), Final Four wins (17), tournament appearances (24), tournament games (104) and tournament wins (87).

Summitt took over the women's program at Tennessee in 1974 at age 22 when there were no scholarships and she had to wash the uniforms and drive the team van. The team name Lady Vols was yet to evolve.

A mere 53 fans watched Summitt win her first game, a 69-32 victory over Middle Tennessee on Jan. 10, 1975. Summitt's record could stretch well past 1,000 before she retires.

Summitt is the second college coach to pass Smith this season.

Harry Statham of McKendree College in the NAIA did earlier this year and finished the year with 896 wins.

Lockwood's primary responsibilities involve player development, recruiting and scouting. He served as an assistant coach with the Tennessee men's program from 1986-91. During that period, UT earned an NCAA Tournament berth and made two appearances in the NIT.

"We're very excited to have Dean join our Lady Vol basketball staff," Summitt said at the time of his hiring. "He brings years of valuable coaching experience both as an assistant and head coach. Additionally, he is also already very familiar with UT andKnoxville having served as an assistant coach for five years under both Don DeVoe and Wade Houston."

Lockwood was men's head coach at Saginaw Valley State University from 1998-2004. Previously, he spent a season as a men's assistant basketball coach with Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

From 1991-97, Lockwood was men's head basketball coach at Northwood University, Midland, Michigan, where he led the team to its first back-to-back winning seasons in 15 years. After posting an 18-9 record and a second-place finish in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division during the 1996-97 campaign, the Bay City, Mich., native was honored as the GLIAC Coach of the Year.

Lockwood also served as a men's assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point from 1983-86 and as a men's graduate assistant at Central Michigan in 1982-83.

"I'm absolutely thrilled and delighted to have this opportunity," Lockwood said. "Since beginningmy coaching stint here in 1986-87, I have had the utmost respect for Pat Summitt and her program. It's a program that has great respect for the game, it teaches, it develops people, it cares about people, it's far-ranging in the impact it has and it gives back to the game. To have the opportunity to come back here is thrilling for me."

In addition to his head and assistant coaching duties, Lockwood has conducted a number of coaching and playing clinics in England and was a consultant and clinician for the Welsh Basketball Association. Also, he has served as the summer camp director at Saginaw Valley State, Northwood and West Point.

As a player, Lockwood was a four-year letter winner at Spring Arbor College, Spring Arbor, Michigan, and was captain for two seasons. He helped lead the squad to a school one-season record in wins and was offered a contract to play professional basketball in the English Basketball Association.

Lockwood earned a bachelor's degree in secondaryeducation from Spring Arbor in 1982 and a master's degree in counseling and personal and student development from CMU in 1989.###
