Homecoming week always poses a challenge for teams and coaches. With all the festivities and distractions, it is always concerning that teams can lose their focus or edge heading into a big contest. Heading into Friday's Homecoming game against always tough Midland Dow, a team fighting for their playoff life, Western fought off those distractions and kept focus on their own playoff destiny as well as keeping on track for the conference title as they powered their way to a 28-20 win over Dow.

Midland took the opening kickoff and went right to work. The Chargers moved the ball down the field in precision fashion as they reached the Warrior 9 yard line in just over a minute of play. Then Lucas Bourelle powered his way into the end zone and with the Devon Thompson kick, just like that the Chargers were on top, 7-0.

Midland's defense matched the offense's intensity as they stone walled Western for a three and out and took possession on the punt. The Western sideline recognized the urgency of the night and fired up their defense. This produced the first break of the night. After forcing a Dow punt attempt, a bad snap caused the punter to forgo the punt and attempt a pass that failed giving Western the ball on Dow's 22 yard line. The Warriors took advantage of the miscue and moments later Charles Proctor raced into the end zone for the 5 yard line and with a Rob Vennix kick, the game was tied 7-7.

Western shut down the Charger's offense and moments later looked to be out front. Mason Myers broke loose for an apparent 64 yard TD run but a penalty brought it back. Undaunted, the Warriors drove back down the field again but were turned away when Dow's Travis McNally intercepted the ball on the Western 5 yard line.

Midland got their offense back on track as they drove to the Western 15. The Warrior D stiffened and it was the Mason Myers show. Riding on the legs of the talented running back, he found big holes to help move the Warriors down field before scoring from the three to make it 14-7 with just over 4 minutes to play in the half. The final four minutes of the half got interesting. After driving down the field looking for the equalizer, Western's Corey Bero halts the drive at the Warrior 18 when he intercepted the pass. But Dow got the ball back with just over a minute to play as they intercepted a pass at the Western 27. Dow's Gavin Groszek wasted little time as he hit Brennen Miller on a 27 yard touchdown strike knotting the game at 14 apiece. Western took the ball from their 30 yard line and march 70 yards in 48 seconds. Mason Myer capped off the drive by bull dozing in from the 1 and just like that, Western had recaptured the lead heading into halftime, 21-14.

Western received the ball to start the second half and the Warriors picked up where they left off. Driving down field, Mason bursts in from the 7 for his third touchdown of the night and giving Western a commanding 28-14 third quarter lead.

Then it was the Western defense that took center stage. Jon Metz stopped the Chargers with an interception. And the defense kept shutting down Midland the rest of the night. As the Chargers tried to rally, Metz intercepted his second pass of the night with just over 3 minutes to play. When Dow got the ball back, they reached into their bag of tricks. Pulling off the flea flicker, with wide receiver Brennen Miller hits Zack Hook to the one before Lucas Bourelle punches it in. A failed two point conversion made it 28-20.

Dow tried an onside kick but Jon Metz completed a stellar individual performance by going up and hauling down the kick to secure the win and Western's 5th straight appearance in the playoffs with a 28-20 Saginaw Valley Conference win. Mason Myers lead the Western ground attack with 155 yards on 28 carries while Charles Proctor added 46 yards on only 4 attempts. QB Joe Ivan added 81 yards through the air with 9 for 15 passing with 3 of those passes to Proctor for 29 yards.
