Friday night's volleyball district finals pitted two old rivals together in John Glenn and Garber.

Both teams played never-say-die points as long volleys and diving saves kept the games very exciting. In what was to be the final game, Glenn was within one point of the title before Garber pulled ahead and within one point of sending the game to a fifth and final game. But the Bobcats rallied to score the final three points giving them their first ever district volleyball title.

Game one started very spirited and charged up as both teams exchanged unforced errors. John Glenn started to pull away early as their kills kept landing just out of the reach of the diving Lady Dukes. Garber was very scrappy as they battled back to tie the game at 8-8. Garber then built on this confidence to take charge of the game. Unable to effectively make kill shots, they employed strategic placing of their net shots over the outstretched arms of the Lady Bobcats front line to build a 15-10 lead. After a Glenn timeout helped the Bobcats pull within two points, Garber regrouped to pull ahead 23-15. Then junior Monica Skrabut delivered a big time kill and Garber was up one game to none.

John Glenn came out strong in the second game. They reeled off the first three points, and then they extended their lead to 10-4. Play settled down as both teams exchanged points without either side gaining an advantage. But Glenn's front line continued to dominate this game with many blocks, kills and well placed shots to help build a 20-11 lead. Garber mounted a comeback as they netted four straight points. But Glenn regrouped to pull off a 25-16 win, tying the match.

Game three turned into a game of ebb and flow. Glenn took an early lead but the Lady Dukes, as they had done all night, fought back. Their front line re-established a presence at the net lead by Monica Skrabut and teammates Stacie Finkbeiner and Casey Blundell. The two teams battled hard going back and forth with the game being tied at 20 apiece. Glenn then pulled out to a four point lead and was within one point of the win before Garber knocked down two points to pull to 24-22. Brooke Rosebrock sealed the win with a kill down the sidelines giving the Lady Bobcats a 2-1 game advantage.

Game four turned into a real hard fought tight battle between the two teams. Neither team could mount an advantage as they both dove and dug to a 10-10 tie. Then Glenn ignited, scoring five straight points and looking like they were going to run away with the game and district title. But Garber showed no quit as they fought back to take the lead at 17-16.

Both teams felt the urgency of the night as they continued to dive and make great one hand saves on what appeared to be sure points. After Garber pulled ahead 22-20, Glenn's Brooke Rosebrock seemingly put her team on her back to carry them through. She finished the next four points with two cross court kills, a block at the net for a point and another kill to put her Lady Bobcats to within one point of the title at 24-22. Fitting of the night, Garber fought right back taking a 25-24 lead. Then Rosebrock tied the score with another kill and followed that with an ace serve that landed just at the back line pulling her team back to within a point of the title. The final point was another fierce scramble by both teams. When the ball landed just past the diving Lady Dukes, John Glenn celebrated their first ever district volleyball crown with a 27-25 game win and a 3-1 match win.

While they will surely enjoy this accomplishment, John Glenn is already back to work preparing to take on a very tough Cadillac team in Regional play. Cadillac swept through their districts and post a 32-6-1 record. Given the tenacity of Glenn's effort Friday night, they will give Cadillac all they can handle as they look to bring home a Regional title. Game time is Tuesday at 5:30 pm at the Houghton Lake High School.

John Keuvelaar,

Thank you SO much for the detailed article. It is great to have coverage for our area teams, as they work very hard both on and off the courts. The pictures tell a story on their own, but I especially appreciate the articulate reporting with correct facts, scores, and emotions of the game. Great coverage!
