The goal of this act is to re-evaluate the standards for school nutrition in response to the nationwide obesity epidemic. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the new school meals are intended to be high in nutrients and adequate in calories, consistent with the latest nutrition science.
"We have been moving in this direction all along," said Bay City Public Schools Food Service Director Lorie Grant.
As a result of this act, students will begin to see their cafeterias stocked with more fruits and vegetables. In addition to fresher, healthier options, portion sizes will be re-evaluated, taking into account factors such as age and activity level.
Grant notes that the changes enacted have gotten a positive response from students, "They are eating well and buying the food," and later adds, "I think this is a positive changes, we are promoting health and wellness."
