The Micro Park at the corner of Center and Saginaw Streets in Downtown Bay City
The completion of the first Bay City Rotary Club Downtown Micro Park will be celebrated in a special ceremony on Tuesday, April 19, 2005. The event will be held at 12:45 at the site of the Micro Park on the northeast corner of the Delta College Planetarium block, 100 Center Avenue.
The Bay City Rotary Club has graciously awarded the funding to the Bay City Downtown Management Board and Development Authority in 2004 for the first Micro Park through their Major Project Grant Program. Each Park will include a kiosk that displays an historic image with support text on a glass panel.
When viewing the glass panel, one can look through the image on the glass to see how much (or how little) the depicted structure or street scene has changed over the years.
The Rotary Grant will also fund two additional historic kiosks. The proposed locations are at the Waterfall Park and the Pere Marquette Depot.
This Downtown Micro Park is the first step in developing the Art & Heritage Loop (The L) project. This ambitious project involves an estimated 8-10 Micro Parks which will be strategically placed throughout the Downtown connecting the natural, cultural and historic assets of the celebrated historic district.
Bay City was awarded the Cool Cities designation by the state for this project in 2004. The grant proposal's catalyst project, the Waterfall Park, was awarded a $100,000 Cool Cities Grant.
Each Micro Park location will also include an art element as part of The Art Center/Studio 23 and The Bay Arts Council Pilot Program, Art in Public Places Program. The art in this first Micro Park was designed by Delta College student, Janie Peters. This six foot sculpture is based upon the nautical navigation device known as a sextant.
As a classical marine instrument, it is representative of Bay City's ties to the Saginaw River both historically and currently, and it is also representative of the Delta College Planetarium because it uses celestial bodies to provide navigational direction.
Ms. Peters is currently creating the sculpture off site. A model of the sculpture will be on display for the ceremony.
The ceremony on Tuesday will also include the showing of a special video produced for the Delta College Planetarium, "Celebrating Bay City". Narrated by Eric Jylha, this special 11 minute planetarium show emphasizes the rich history and development of Bay City with images from several eras: Native Americans, Early Settlers, Lumbering, Shipbuilding, Modern Times and Our Future.
This tribute to Bay City is an original production through a cooperative partnership between Delta College and the Historic Museum of Bay County.
