As a result of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, The Bay City Public School Food Service Department continues making changes to comply with the new policies. According to Bay City Public School Food Service Director Lorie Grant, new limitations have been put on the calories, fat, and sodium that can be included in items on the lunch menu.
Grant states that the new guidelines "updated nutrition standards," based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and recommendations made by the Institute of Medicine, and "mandated a minimum serving size limit and a maximum serving size limit for food."
New menus have been well received throughout the district, although Grant notes that they may have been a little hasty, "we made big changes that people are not use to." The United States Department of Agriculture points out that "Patience and support are needed to work through the transition phase" and reassures that they will "continue to be there to help schools make the new standards a success."
