The poverty of rational thought by radical gun advocates was displayed for all to see by Congressman Louis Gohmert on Sunday.

Poor, sick Louie said in an interview that had the Sandy Hook school principal had a gun, she could have "taken off the head" of the mass slayer.

That is the mentality of the gun nuts who have ruled our politics in recent years: more guns make us safer.

The argument is ludicrous on its face.

Well, Ba Ba Louie, would the Speaker of the House of Representatives, had he been armed in 1954, been able to stop the Puerto Rican terrorists shooting from the House gallery?

Remember the incident? Four Puerto Rican nationalists, led by 34-year-old Lolita Lebron, fired 30 rounds from the gallery at Members of Congress in session below.

Five lawmakers wounded in the attack were Alvin M. Bentley (R-Michigan), from Owosso, who took a bullet to the chest, Clifford Davis (D-Tennessee), who was shot in the leg, Ben F. Jensen (R-Iowa), who was shot in the back, as well as George Hyde Fallon (D-Maryland) and Kenneth A. Roberts (D-Alabama). House pages helped carry Alvin Bentley off the House floor. The representatives were treated and recovered.

Gohmert, a Republican from Tyler, Texas, told Fox News announcer Chris Wallace the mass slaughter would have been averted had Principal Dawn Hochsprung been packing that awful Friday in Newton, Connecticut.

Here's what Rep. Gohmert said:

"I wish to God she had an M-4 locked up in her office so when she hears the gunfire she takes him out and takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids."

That's the argument that has been used lately for unlimited expansion of gun access: more guns equals less deaths by guns.

Could Ms. Hochsprung, had she been familiar with guns and practiced frequently at her local neighborhood target range, really have opened the school safe, removed her weapon and dashed madly to the sound of the gunfire, aimed carefully at a heavily armed maniac in the midst of mayhem, and fired a telling shot to stop the carnage?

Our Lt. Gov. Brian Calley here in Michigan spoke here recently and tried to peddle some of the same putrid hash from the National Rifle Association. An advocate of what these folks call "open carry," Mr. Calley touted the idea that guns in "target rich environments" as he called it, would make us all safer.

The terminology is enough to scare the average person; what he means by "target rich environments" is churches, schools, colleges, libraries, bars, etc.

Former judge Gohmert spewed the same tripe last July when a gunman killed 12 in an Aurora, Colorado, theater. "Did no one have a gun in the theater?" he asked naively, again making the case for "concealed carry."

If we buy Gohmert's "more guns less crime" rationale in any way we are guilty of allowing these incidents to continue.

Gohmert, the NRA and all its lobbyists and all the more guns advocates can't change reality. Shooters have the advantage and a nation that condones multiple bullet magazines and assault weapons is committing serial suicide.

Did "open carry" in the Wild West deter gun violence? Anyone who has ever watched a Western movie knows the fastest draw wins and the loser dies.

Gohmert, citing a decline of Judeo-Christian values, said there are too many "twisted minds" in this country.

I guess the best thing we can say to Louie is: "Look in the mirror." ### ###
