MIDLAND -- A free Tennis Open House for 10 and under kids across the Great Lakes Bay Region will be hosted Saturday March 2 from 4-5:15 p.m., at the Midland Community Tennis Center, recently designated by the USTA as one of several National 10-Under Training Sites.
Last year, MCTC 10-under tennis introduced 29,000 children from 72 schools to the game that features age-appropriate equipment, scaled courts and special tennis balls, enabling kids to play and learn at the same time, said Director of Tennis Sharon Cleland, USPTA/PTR.
Tennis racquets and snacks will be provided for the youngsters who will learn, rally and play the game almost immediately, Cleland said.
"The key to the 10-under tennis phenomenon is emphasizing the fun of play, while at the same time teaching basics."
Cleland served on the USTA 10-Under National Curricula Committee to establish this new instruction for youngsters. She also is a national consultant for the 10-under tennis initiative of the PTR-Professional Tennis Registry, an international organization of 40,000 tennis professionals, representing 18 countries.
"The free open house gets new or retuning kids on the court with activities and games in a great atmosphere of friends and fun," said Cleland who is expecting 75-100 youngsters.
The Tennis Open House is drop in, no registration required. Parents are welcome.
