Fishing, taking pictures, and writing, that's the job of an outdoor writer, and what a job it is! As many as 200 Tri-County youth from age 9 to 15 will geta chance to try their hand at being an outdoor writer as part of a summer event called "Fishin' for a Good Story", billed as a "literacy-based fishing program".

Sponsored by Dow Chemical, the program is part of thh "In-Fisherman ProfessionalWalleye Tournament" to be held in Bay City this June. According to a press release from Shirley Roberts of the Bay Area Convention & Visitors Bureau "Tri-County youth will need more than skill with a rod and reel to win a new fishing contest this June. They'll need a good eye and a vivid imagination. "Fishin' for a Good Story" is a program designed to encourage young people between the ages of 9 and 15 to enjoy the sport of fishing, tap into their creativity and introduce them to professions relatedto the great outdoors."

The event will start with a series of three clinics held at the Bay City State Recreation Area on Saturday, June 18.
  • Valerie Blaschka, Park Inter-preter, will lead "Fishing 101", a clinic modeled after In-Fisherman Pathways to Fishing program. Age-appropriate books related to fishing will be provided.
  • Kent Miller, Professor of Photography atCentral Michigan University, will teach "Photography 101" covering the fundamentals of outdoor photography using disposable cameras provided to the youth.
  • Tim Smith, author of the popular Buck Wilder Adventure Series of books, will lead a "Book Writing 101" clinic and provide the kids with notebooks and ideas.
With training behind them, the kids will be sent "into the field" with the assignment to "fish, document their experiences, and produce a book". Equiped with fishing poles, disposable cameras and notebooks provided as part of the program, the adventures will begin.

The finished books will be due on June 27 at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Bay and Saginaw counties where they will be judged by a group of professional journalists. Three winners will be selected in each of the two age divisions: 9 to 12 and 13 to 15. Winners will be announced from the stage of the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Tournament on Wednesday, June 29th, in Bay City's Veterans Memorial Park.

"Fishin' for a Good Story" was developed in conjunction with the well-respected national organization "In-Fisherman" which returns to Bay City and the Saginaw River for a regional tournament June 29—July 1.
