TT's Butternut Squash Soup, prepared by Bay City's Karen Polega, was named "Best of all the Rest" at a cooking competition held recently at The Maytag Store in Saginaw.
The soup-cooking contest was sponsored by WSGW Radio's "Listen to the Mrs." radio program. Eight finalists participated in a live cook-off at The Maytag Store kitchen to determine the first-place winner.
Polega said that she entered the contest after hearing it advertised on a WSGW 790AM radio show called "Listen to the Mrs." -- featuring co-hosts Art Lewis and Sue Smith.
Polega said that she had originally planned to cook her "Wild Mushroom Soup" in the contest. "Funny thing though," Polega said, "I don't really have a (written) recipe for the mushroom soup." She then added, "I just make it (mushroom soup) from memory and it changes a little bit every time I make it."
Polega said she decided to use a recipe that she got from younger sister, Tracy -- Butternut Squash Soup.
Tracey's nickname is "TT" . . . given to her when family nieces and nephews were little and could not pronounce Tracey's full name. So that is why Polega put the "TT" in front of the Butternut Squash Soup name for the contest.
"When I entered the contest, I really didn't think I would get picked for the finals," Polega said. "But I thought it was worth a try."
After she got picked for the Finals, Polega thought she might have a chance for 3rd place. "When we were all cooking the soup at the Maytag Store in Saginaw," Polega said, "and, I saw the other ladies soups, I thought I would never win. Their soups all looked so good and bountiful!"
Polega says her soup "is just a plain creamed soup, but with lots of flavor!"
The judges thought Polega's soup was the best in the contest.
"I was shocked when Art Lewis announced that I had won First Place and the $200 cash prize," Polega said. "It made wearing the hair net all day worth while."
