OK here's the story: A physician, a teacher and a state policeman go into an art studio.

What do they do?

This is not a joke: they produce works of art that are worth displaying to the public.

A diverse group of artists will exhibit their work at Studio 23/The Arts Center March 29 to May 3.

The exhibit of photography and pottery features photography by a physician and pottery by a retired school teacher and a retired state police officer.

Gary Dardas will be showing 80 "Landscapes in Black & White," taken over the past 40 years.

Charlie Schwartz and Tom Pietrzak will show their pottery in an exhibit entitled "Mud, Men & Fire."

Mr. Schwartz is a retired teacher from the Bay City Public School and has 38 years art experience. He was involved many years supervising a summer program for at-risk youth. He also is a longtime art instructor at Studio 23/The Art Center.

Tom Pietrzak, husband of Studio 23 curator Deb Pietrzak, is a retired state police officer who has become an accomplished potter.

Mr. Schwartz, an art teacher who has been making pottery for 12 years, describes his work as "functional," using stoneware, a high fire clay that is safe and can be used for food in the kitchen.

Gary uses a large format (LF) camera with 4x5 film that captures amazing detail.

The 80 LF photo prints to be shown are among many he has taken that he describes as "eliciting emotion tapping into a reservation of expectations" in the viewers.

He says large format black and white photography is a distinctive art form.

In LF cameras the lens is connected to the film plane with a bellows, allowing control of the perspective and sharpness in a way which cannot be achieved with a regular camera.

The prints are produced by high tech drum scans and specialty printers.

"I hope people appreciate this elegant medium of expression," said Dardas.

Gary was graduated from Bay City Junior College and Central Michigan University, earned a PhD in microbiology from Michigan State University and was graduated with an MD degree in Internal Medicine from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit. He practices internal medicine with Tuscola Physicians, 714 S. Trumbull Ave., Bay City.
