Take the proverbial trip down memory lane by logging on to the East Michigan Tourist Association's 1942 promotion book.

All the glories of East Michigan we once knew are there to revel in, thanks to a non-profit educational effort The Online Books Page.

T.F. Marston, of Bay City, was secretary-manager of the EMTA, whose iconic log office was across from the Bay City Times at Fifth Avenue and Adams Street.

Hundreds of local board members in the member communities were headed by James Driver, of Midland.

"It is the tourist association's purpose to advertise and publicize in an unbiased manner the recreational advantages of East Michigan," the EMTA proclaimed in its book.

H. Frank Davis was the next secretary-manager, succeeding Marston. He was followed in 1961 by James H. Hall, 31, named from his post as a tourism research associate from Michigan State University.

In April 1952, Davis announced the publication and distribution of 50,000 copies of the EMTA Guidebook "Playtime." The 128 page book had a full color cover, a writeup on every county within the area and an "Eat, Sleep and Shop" directory.

Bay City was touted as the place "Where the Summer Trails Begin," and ads included one from Duchaine's Restaurant (Recommended by Duncan Hines) located downtown..

Linden Hoff, at the corner of US-23 and M-20, advertised 10 single cottages $2, 7 double cottages $3, Heated, Electric lights, Flush Toilets, Community Showers.

The Online Books Page was founded, and is edited, by John Mark Ockerbloom, He is a digital library planner and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. He is solely responsible for the content of the site.

The site is hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, who provide the server, disk space, and network bandwidth for the site. They also employ the editor, and support him in his various digital library activities (of which this is but one).

The Online Books Page originally was founded in 1993 by the current editor, while he was a student at Carnegie Mellon University. He maintained it there until summer 1999, with Web space and computing resources provided by the School of Computer Science. In 1999, it moved to its present location at Penn.

The books on the extended shelves come primarily from HathiTrust, and Project Gutenberg, who supply the cataloging information we use in those listings.
