About 30 music lovers braved spring showers to enjoy a little music in the park. Most folks just stood under their umbrellas. One couple found a completely dry spot by putting their folding chairs under the canopy of the tall fir trees near the stage. A few folks just went up on stage and sat around the edge under the shell. The small crowd and soft rain gave the concert a very intimate feeling between band and audience.

Normally a concert would be moved to the Central High School auditorium in the event of rain. But to do that, the decision must be made by 2:00 in the afternoon. On this day, the weather looked fine at 2:00. So the band gathered at the shell and "did their duty".

The Bay Concert Band is a community band thatinvites any "post high school" musician to play. As conductor David Kjellberg is fond of saying "the audition process consists of bringing your instrument, standing up and introducing yourself, then finding a seat".

From the program one reads "The Bay Concert Band, also known as "Second Wind", was the brainchild of Mrs. Peg Rowley, Dr. James Fenton, Jim Griffiths, and Wally Cramer. They placed two articles in The Bay City Times requesting former band students who had graduated from high school to come to the Bay City Central band room to organize a community band".

It was September 20, 1977 when 77 musicians gathered for the first rehearsal under the baton of Wally Cramer. 28 years later the band is going strong, rehearsing Tuesday nights in Bay City Central High's band room, and performing four concerts at Central High plus two or three "road trips" and then the spring concert in the park.

Wednesday's concert was the second of the Bay Arts Council's Wednesdays in the Park concert series. For fourteen weeks beginning June 8 and ending September 7, a different concert is presented in Wenona Park on the River Front starting at 7:00 pm. Admission ranges from $3 to $8. Season "Grass Passes" are available for $60. Performers include local and national groups and cover the spectrum from rock to rythym to choral groups like the Sweet Adelines.

In addition to the Wednesday evening concerts, the Bay Arts Council presents the Young People's Summer Series, a series of eight FREE events and concerts. The series kicks off on June 29 with The Flying Aces pro frisbee team. Other events include the ventriloquism team of Vikki and Danny Gasko, Nate the Great, and the Gratitude Steel Band.

The Young People's Summer Series events start at 11:30am on Wednesdays and are FREE Admission to everyone!

On Sunday mornings in July and August First Presbyterian Church holds their "First at Friendship" casual worship servicesat the Friendship Shell in the park. Everyone is welcome from 8:00 am to 9:00 am.
