The nation's largest Sea Cadet training vessel, the Grayfox, is back in Bay City for a nine-day visit and is offering public tours.

The 120 foot long vessel arrived at the Wenonah Park dock near the DoubleTree Hotel in Bay City on Monday evening, June 27, and will stay until Tuesday, July 5, when it is slated to return to its home port of Port Huron.

The visit of theGrayfox is sponsored by the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum, (SVNSM) the organization that is working on the location here of a full-size U.S. Navy destroyer, the USS Edson.

The Grayfox is a former Navy torpedo retriever, used in recovering spent torpedoes used in training. It has been modified for cadet training programs and both male and female cadets from the Port Huron area are aboard along with volunteer crew members and officers.

Tours of the ship are free of charge with donations requested, according to Mike Kegley, president of the SVNSM.

"The ship also will be providing cruises for the Boys and Girls Club of Bay County and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts," said Mr. Kegley.

The Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a youth program for young Americans, male and female, ages 14-18. Objective of the group is to develop an interest and skill in basic seamanship. Navy League Cadets, ages 11-13, also are involved with the program.

The Sea Cadet program is staffed by volunteers including regular Navy and Coast Guard personnel who assist in training cadets and maintenance of the ship.###
