Never underestimate experience as the Western High made yet another trip to the high school softball Regionals held at Saginaw Valley State University. The experience paid off as strong pitching, timely hitting and Alpena's inability to handle throws to third helped lead the Lady Warriors into the Regional finals against Grand Blanc.

Alpena was the first to threaten in the top of the first when a two out double put a runner in scoring position. But Hannah Leppek struck out the next batter to quash the threat. Western then jumped on Alpena early when Meredith Rousse lead off the bottom of the first by lacing a double off the center field fence. KayLynn Carpenter followed Rousse's double with one of her own in the same spot putting Western up 1-0. Leppek hit a single to shortstop as the fielder tried to make the only play she had be going to third to get the advancing runner. But the throw eluded the third baseman allowing Carpenter to score as Western jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Alpena looked to respond in the second when a walk and a single put runners on second and third with one out. But Leppek was up to the task as she set down the next two batter ending the threat.

Meredith Rousse helped Western add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. After singling, the speedy shortstop stole second and third base then came home when the throw to the bag sailed over the third baseman's head making it 3-0.

Alpena looked like they make get back into the game with they loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning on a walk and two singles. But Leppek struck on the next hitter and coaxed the third out on a grounder to second to preserve the shutout.
