Richard M. Doherty

We hear much about the vast destruction of Irish records during the shelling and fire in the Public Record Office in Dublin in 1922. However, there are many Irish genealogical sources that have survived.

Richard M. Doherty will present a lecture about the major sources of genealogical information in Ireland, and methods for accessing these records from North America in the Kantzler Community Room at Wirt Library, 500 Center Ave. in Bay City, on Saturday, June 29, 2-3 pm. The focus will be on the use of online databases and the microfilm holdings of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The event is free, but registration is required at 989-893-9566 ext. 2200.

Richard M. Doherty is a professional genealogist, author and lecturer with 40+ years of experience and 31 research trips to Ireland. He has lectured on Irish genealogy since 1982 in the U.S., Canada and Ireland, including two Irish Genealogical Congresses held at Trinity College in Dublin, and at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Co. Kildare.

He is a past-president of the Irish Genealogical Society of Michigan, Detroit Society for Genealogical Research and the Oakland County Genealogical Society. Dick sits on the board of the Friends of the Burton Historical Collection, and is the director of Celtic Quest, LLC. He is a delegate to the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the Michigan Genealogical Council, and is a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild.
