Another successful retreive

Looking for a duck boat?

In Late August you could see people "Winging In" from all spectrums of the compass to the 7th Annual Michigan Duck Hunter's Association - Saginaw Bay Waterfowl Clinic.

Activities over the two days were continuous, including photography contests, decoy carving contests, waterfowl calling clinics and contests, dog retrieving demos and more.

The weather was a little shaky on Saturday, not that a seasoned waterfowl hunter would notice but Sunday was absolutely gorgeous for the days activities.

Vendors were there from all over the state and the duck and goose calls could be heard all over the park.Winging down the mid-way visitors got a chance to check out and test the latest in hand-carved calls, duck boats, gear and accessories.

One booth that led the flock was Whiskey River Boat Shop. Marty Wieszczecinski, owner-builder, is based right here in Bay City.

Marty has worked very closely with designer, Sam Devlin, so that they may provide customers with the highest-quality duck boats. Not only does Whiskey River Boat Shop offer a complete line of duck boats, but they also offer custom kits, or boats finished to any stage of construction desired.

It was very clear why they chose to participate in theSaginaw Bay Waterfowl clinic. Everywhere one looked there were people searching for the latest and greatest items to make this year's waterfowl season successful.

Walking down to Tobico Lagoon you could hear splashing and people having a great time. Were the ducks already coming in? Nope, not yet. It was the parent - youth canoe race, sponsored by Franks Great Outdoors.

Parents and children, some first-timers, braved the waters for an all out competition around the Tobico Lagoon! Everyone came out a winner with a decoy in tow and a smile to boot!

After the lagoon calmed down the place "Went To The Dogs". Darrin Morman, of Windy Acres Kennels, in Freeland, brought out a variety of highly skilled retrievers and some "retriever's at heart" to show the amazing performances of a well-trained retriever. Darrin brought out a few master hunters and some dogs still in training so that all could see the different levels of skill in the dogs. He also answered questions from the crowd and gave a few tips and tricks to those that wanted their "best hunting buddy" to help out in this year's hunt.

All in all the weekend was a success with the help of all who volunteered and all of those who are "Partners in Conservation". I know I'm already looking forward to next year's clinic on August 2-3, 2003 at the Bay City State Recreation Area.
